Job Description

We are seeking a meticulous and highly skilled Copy Editor to join our dynamic editorial team. In this pivotal role, you will be responsible for ensuring the accuracy, clarity, consistency, and grammatical correctness of all our published content across various platforms, including print and digital. This involves a thorough review process from manuscript submission to final publication, encompassing not just grammar and spelling but also adherence to our house style guide, factual accuracy where applicable, and overall readability. You will collaborate closely with writers, journalists, and designers, providing constructive feedback and implementing necessary revisions to elevate the quality of our publications. The ideal candidate will possess an eagle eye for detail, an impeccable command of the English language, and a deep understanding of journalistic principles and editorial workflows. Key Responsibilities

  • Proofread and edit copy for grammar, spelling, punctuation, style, and syntax across all publications.
  • Verify factual accuracy, identify inconsistencies, and ensure content adheres to established house style guides and editorial policies.
  • Review content for clarity, readability, tone, and conciseness, making suggestions for improvement.
  • Collaborate with writers, journalists, and content creators to provide constructive feedback and ensure content quality.
  • Manage multiple editing projects simultaneously, adhering to strict deadlines and publication schedules.
  • Perform substantive edits, line edits, and copy edits as required by the nature of the content.
  • Ensure legal compliance and avoid libelous, defamatory, or plagiarized content.
  • Assist in the development and refinement of internal style guides and editorial best practices.
  • Work closely with designers and layout artists to ensure text flows seamlessly and fits design specifications.
  • Conduct final checks before publication to ensure error-free delivery across print and digital platforms.

Required Skills

  • Exceptional command of the English language (grammar, spelling, punctuation, syntax).
  • Proven experience in copy editing, proofreading, and reviewing content for publication.
  • Strong understanding of journalistic ethics and media law.
  • Proficiency with content management systems (CMS) and standard office software.
  • Excellent attention to detail and a keen eye for errors.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills for collaborative work.
  • A Bachelor's degree in Journalism, English, Communications, or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with editing content for both print and digital platforms.
  • Familiarity with Mauritian cultural context and current affairs.
  • Knowledge of SEO best practices for digital content.
  • Proficiency in French is a strong asset.
  • Experience with style guides such as AP, Chicago, or in-house specific guides.
