Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Database Administrator (DBA) to join our dynamic IT team in Marondera. In this critical role, you will be responsible for the performance, integrity, and security of our various databases, which underpin our expansive telecommunications network and business operations. As a DBA at Econet Wireless Zimbabwe, you will play a pivotal role in designing, implementing, maintaining, and repairing our database infrastructure. You will work closely with application developers, system administrators, and other stakeholders to ensure optimal database performance, availability, and recoverability. Your expertise will be crucial in managing large-scale data environments, performing routine monitoring, troubleshooting complex issues, and implementing robust security measures. This role requires a proactive individual with a deep understanding of database technologies, a meticulous approach to data management, and a commitment to continuous improvement. Key Responsibilities

  • Install, configure, and maintain database servers and systems (e.g., Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL).
  • Monitor database performance, implement tuning strategies, and troubleshoot issues to ensure optimal efficiency and availability.
  • Perform database backups, recovery, and replication strategies to safeguard critical business data.
  • Implement and maintain database security measures, including user access control, encryption, and auditing.
  • Develop, manage, and test database disaster recovery plans.
  • Collaborate with developers to optimize SQL queries, stored procedures, and database schemas.
  • Plan and execute database migrations, upgrades, and patching activities.
  • Automate routine database tasks using scripting languages (e.g., Python, Bash).
  • Provide technical support and guidance to development and operations teams.
  • Document database architecture, configurations, and operational procedures.

Required Skills

  • Proficiency in database administration for at least two major RDBMS (e.g., Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL).
  • Strong understanding of database design, normalization, and data modeling.
  • Experience with database performance tuning and optimization.
  • Knowledge of database security best practices and implementation.
  • Familiarity with database backup, recovery, and replication strategies.
  • Proficiency in SQL and scripting languages (e.g., Bash, Python).
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • Certifications in database administration (e.g., Oracle Certified Professional, Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator).
  • Experience with cloud database services (e.g., AWS RDS, Azure SQL Database, Google Cloud SQL).
  • Familiarity with NoSQL databases (e.g., MongoDB, Cassandra).
  • Experience in a telecommunications environment.
  • Knowledge of ITIL frameworks and practices.
