Key Responsibilities

  • Install, configure, patch, and upgrade database software and related products (e.g., SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL).
  • Monitor database performance, implement tuning strategies, and optimize queries to ensure high availability and responsiveness.
  • Develop, test, and implement robust backup and recovery strategies, including disaster recovery plans.
  • Manage database security, including user access, roles, and permissions, ensuring compliance with data protection regulations.
  • Proactively identify and troubleshoot database-related issues, perform root cause analysis, and implement corrective actions.
  • Perform database capacity planning and advise on hardware and software resource allocation.
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation of database configurations, procedures, and schemas.
  • Collaborate with development teams to design efficient database structures and support application development life cycles.
  • Automate routine database tasks using scripting languages (e.g., PowerShell, Bash).
  • Participate in on-call rotation for critical database incidents, as required.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience as a Database Administrator with expertise in relational databases (e.g., SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL).
  • Strong proficiency in SQL (T-SQL, PL/pgSQL, or equivalent) for query optimization and data manipulation.
  • Solid understanding of database design, schema management, and data normalisation principles.
  • Experience with database backup, recovery, and high availability solutions.
  • Proficiency in performance monitoring and tuning tools and techniques.
  • Familiarity with operating systems such as Windows Server and Linux.
  • Knowledge of database security best practices and compliance.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with cloud-based database services (e.g., AWS RDS, Azure SQL Database, Google Cloud SQL).
  • Familiarity with NoSQL databases (e.g., MongoDB, Cassandra).
  • Experience with database clustering, replication, and AlwaysOn Availability Groups.
  • Relevant professional certifications (e.g., Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate, PostgreSQL Associate).
  • Knowledge of scripting languages for automation (e.g., Python, PowerShell).
  • Understanding of DevOps principles and CI/CD pipelines in a database context.
