Job Description

Mandera County Referral Hospital is seeking a dedicated Dental Assistant to join our vibrant dental clinic team. Key Responsibilities
- Prepare treatment rooms for dental procedures, ensuring all necessary instruments and materials are sterile and readily available.
- Assist dentists and oral hygienists during various dental procedures, including examinations, cleanings, fillings, extractions, and root canals.
- Perform suctioning, passing instruments, and anticipating the needs of the dental practitioner to ensure a smooth workflow.
- Sterilize and disinfect dental instruments and equipment in accordance with strict infection control protocols and health safety standards.
- Maintain accurate patient records, including dental charts, medical histories, and consent forms, ensuring confidentiality and proper documentation.
- Take and develop dental radiographs (X-rays) as instructed by the dentist, adhering to safety guidelines.
- Provide pre- and post-operative instructions and comprehensive oral hygiene education to patients, promoting long-term dental health.
- Manage dental supply inventory, ensuring adequate stock levels, monitoring expiry dates, and placing orders as needed.
- Schedule patient appointments, manage appointment reminders, and assist with general patient coordination.
- Process dental impressions and prepare models for laboratory work, ensuring accuracy and timely submission.
- Ensure patient comfort throughout their visit, addressing any concerns or questions they may have in a compassionate manner.
- Assist with administrative tasks as required to support the efficient running of the dental clinic and front desk operations.
Required Skills
- Certificate or Diploma in Dental Assisting from a recognized institution.
- At least 1 year of practical experience as a Dental Assistant in a clinical setting.
- Proficiency in dental radiography techniques and strict adherence to radiation safety protocols.
- Strong understanding of dental terminology, instruments, and clinical procedures.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport and empathy with patients.
- Meticulous attention to detail and strong organizational abilities, particularly in maintaining sterile environments.
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of patient information and adhere to ethical guidelines.
- Proficiency in basic computer applications for record-keeping, scheduling, and communication.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as an integral part of a multidisciplinary dental team.
- Current registration or license to practice as a Dental Assistant in Kenya (if applicable).
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of Dento-Maxillofacial Radiology techniques and interpretation.
- Experience with electronic health records (EHR) systems specific to dental practices.
- Additional certifications in areas such as Basic Life Support (BLS) or First Aid.
- Fluency in local languages spoken in Mandera County (e.g., Somali, Borana) is an added advantage.
