Job Description

We are seeking an experienced and dynamic Director of Public Relations to lead our communication strategy and enhance the public image of Rusape Town Council. This pivotal role involves overseeing all aspects of our external and internal communications, media relations, community engagement, and crisis management. The ideal candidate will be a strategic thinker with exceptional communication skills, capable of building and maintaining strong relationships with the media, community leaders, and the general public.

The Director of Public Relations will be instrumental in articulating the Council’s vision, policies, and achievements, ensuring that our messages are clear, consistent, and impactful. You will be responsible for developing and executing comprehensive PR campaigns, managing our brand reputation, and responding effectively to public inquiries and concerns. Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the Council's online and offline presence, ensuring consistent messaging across all communication channels.
  • Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including community leaders, residents, local businesses, and government agencies.
  • Lead crisis communication efforts, developing strategies and messages to effectively manage reputational challenges.
  • Plan and execute public awareness campaigns, community outreach programs, and events.
  • Provide expert communication advice to the Town Clerk, Councillors, and other senior management.
  • Monitor public opinion, media coverage, and social media trends relevant to the Council’s operations.
  • Manage the public relations budget and oversee any external PR agencies or consultants.
  • Mentor and lead a small communications team, fostering a culture of excellence and innovation.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Public Relations, Communications, Journalism, Marketing, or a related field.
  • Proven experience (minimum 8 years) in public relations, with at least 3 years in a senior management or director role.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with a portfolio of successful PR campaigns and materials.
  • Demonstrable experience in media relations and crisis communication management.
  • Strong strategic thinking and leadership abilities.
  • Proficiency in digital communication platforms and social media management.
