Job Description
We are seeking an exceptional and visionary Director of Research & Development (R&D) to lead our innovation initiatives from our Masvingo facility. You will spearhead our entire innovation pipeline, from initial ideation and exploratory research through to rigorous prototype development, testing, and comprehensive commercial viability assessments. Key Responsibilities
- Define, articulate, and execute the long-term R&D strategy in alignment with overall business objectives and market needs.
- Lead, mentor, and expand a high-performing team of scientists, engineers, and researchers, fostering a culture of innovation and collaboration.
- Oversee the entire product/solution development lifecycle, from initial concept generation and feasibility studies to commercialization.
- Manage R&D budgets, allocate resources efficiently, and ensure projects are delivered within established timelines and quality standards.
- Foster a culture of innovation, scientific rigor, continuous improvement, and intellectual curiosity within the R&D department.
- Identify, evaluate, and integrate new technologies, materials, and methodologies that could enhance existing offerings or create new market opportunities.
- Ensure strict compliance with relevant industry standards, regulatory requirements, and best practices for intellectual property protection.
- Collaborate strategically with executive leadership and cross-functional teams to integrate R&D efforts with business development and operational goals.
- Present R&D progress, challenges, and strategic recommendations clearly and persuasively to senior management and external stakeholders.
Required Skills
- Ph.D. in a relevant scientific or engineering discipline (e.g., Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology, Computer Science, etc.).
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in research and development, with at least 5 years in a leadership or directorial role.
- Demonstrated success in managing complex R&D projects and successfully bringing new products or solutions to market.
- Strong understanding of intellectual property protection, patent landscapes, and relevant regulatory frameworks.
- Exceptional strategic thinking, problem-solving, and analytical abilities with a data-driven approach.
- Outstanding leadership, communication (written and verbal), and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in project management software and R&D specific tools and methodologies.
Preferred Qualifications
- MBA or an equivalent business management qualification.
- Experience in a start-up or fast-paced, innovation-driven environment.
- A track record of publications, patents, or industry recognition demonstrating thought leadership and significant innovation.
- Experience with grant writing and successfully securing external R&D funding.
