Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and maintain a caseload of pupils with attendance, welfare, and safeguarding concerns.
  • Conduct comprehensive assessments and risk assessments through home visits and meetings with families, schools, and other agencies.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor effective attendance improvement plans and welfare interventions.
  • Provide expert advice and guidance to schools, parents, and carers on education welfare legislation and local authority procedures.
  • Liaise effectively with a range of internal and external stakeholders, including social services, health professionals, and youth offending teams.
  • Prepare detailed reports for statutory reviews, case conferences, and potential court proceedings (e.g., truancy prosecutions).
  • Act as a lead professional or actively contribute to multi-agency teams focused on child protection and early help.
  • Maintain accurate, confidential, and up-to-date records in line with data protection policies.
  • Advocate for the rights and best interests of children and young people, ensuring their voice is heard.

Required Skills

  • Proven extensive experience (minimum 4 years) in education welfare, social work, or a related field involving direct work with children and families.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of relevant legislation, including the Education Act, Children Act, and safeguarding frameworks in Scotland.
  • Exceptional communication, negotiation, and mediation skills, with the ability to build rapport with diverse individuals.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, capable of assessing complex situations and developing appropriate strategies.
  • Demonstrated ability to work autonomously, manage a demanding caseload, and prioritize effectively.
  • High level of empathy, resilience, and sensitivity when dealing with challenging circumstances.
  • Proficiency in record-keeping, report writing, and IT systems.
  • Full UK driving licence and access to a reliable vehicle for travel across the Aberdeen area.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A degree or professional qualification in Social Work, Youth Work, Education, or a related discipline.
  • Experience in court work or preparing evidence for legal proceedings.
  • Knowledge of local authority structures and educational provision within Aberdeen.
  • Experience mentoring or supervising less experienced staff members.
  • Additional training in child protection or specific therapeutic approaches.
