Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Electrical Engineer with a specialization in Power Systems to join our dynamic team in Old Harbour. This critical role involves contributing to the design, analysis, operation, and maintenance of our extensive power generation, transmission, and distribution systems. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in ensuring the reliability, efficiency, and safety of Jamaica’s electrical grid. You will be instrumental in identifying system improvements, implementing new technologies, and resolving complex technical challenges related to power quality, grid stability, and infrastructure upgrades. Key Responsibilities

  • Design, analyze, and optimize power system components including generators, transformers, switchgear, protection relays, and control systems.
  • Conduct power system studies, including load flow, short circuit, stability, and harmonic analysis, using specialized software (e.g., ETAP, PSS/E, PSCAD).
  • Develop and implement protection schemes for transmission and distribution networks to ensure grid reliability and safety.
  • Oversee the installation, testing, and commissioning of new electrical infrastructure and equipment.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot complex electrical system faults, proposing and implementing effective solutions.
  • Prepare technical specifications, reports, and documentation for projects, adhering to international and local engineering standards.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including operations, maintenance, and project management, to deliver successful projects.
  • Stay abreast of emerging technologies and industry best practices in power systems engineering.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering with a focus on Power Systems.
  • Minimum of 3 years of progressive experience in power systems engineering, preferably within a utility or heavy industrial environment.
  • Proficiency in power system analysis software (e.g., ETAP, PSS/E, DigSilent PowerFactory).
  • Strong understanding of electrical codes, standards (e.g., IEEE, IEC, ANSI), and safety regulations.
  • Demonstrated experience with protection and control systems for high voltage networks.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, for technical reporting and collaboration.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or eligibility for registration with the Professional Engineers Registration Board (PERB) of Jamaica.
  • Experience with renewable energy integration into traditional grids.
  • Project management experience in an engineering context.
