Key Responsibilities
- Provide basic life support (BLS) and pre-hospital emergency medical care under direct or indirect supervision.
- Assess patient conditions, interpret vital signs, and administer first aid/medical interventions as per training and protocols.
- Operate and maintain emergency medical equipment, ensuring readiness for immediate deployment.
- Safely transport patients to medical facilities, providing ongoing care and monitoring during transit.
- Accurately document patient information, medical procedures, and incident details.
- Communicate effectively with patients, families, and other healthcare professionals, demonstrating empathy and professionalism.
- Assist paramedics and other emergency personnel as required during complex incidents, ensuring coordinated care.
- Participate in training exercises and continuous education to enhance skills and knowledge, staying current with best practices.
- Adhere strictly to all medical protocols, safety regulations, company policies, and provincial guidelines for emergency care.
Required Skills
- Current enrollment in or recent graduation from an accredited Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) program.
- Valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (e.g., CPR-HCP, BLS Provider) with a strong understanding of its principles.
- Demonstrated ability to perform accurate patient assessments and administer basic medical care efficiently.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, capable of interacting effectively with diverse populations.
- Ability to remain calm, focused, and effective in high-stress, rapidly changing emergency situations.
- Physical ability to lift and move patients and equipment safely, often under challenging conditions.
- Commitment to patient confidentiality, ethical conduct, and upholding the highest standards of care.
Preferred Qualifications
- Valid Class 4 BC Driver's License or equivalent with a clean driving record.
- Previous volunteer or clinical experience in an emergency medical setting (e.g., first aid responder, hospital volunteer).
- Additional certifications such as ITLS (International Trauma Life Support) or PHTLS (Prehospital Trauma Life Support).
- Familiarity with local geography, road networks, and the healthcare system in the Vancouver area.
- Bilingualism (English and other languages common in Vancouver) is considered an asset.
