Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct inspections, investigations, and audits across commercial and domestic premises to ensure compliance with environmental health legislation (e.g., food safety, health and safety, housing, statutory nuisance).
  • Investigate complaints related to food safety, public health nuisances, environmental pollution, and housing conditions.
  • Provide expert advice and guidance to businesses and residents on environmental health matters, promoting best practice and compliance.
  • Prepare and serve statutory notices, orders, and cautions where necessary, and recommend legal action when appropriate.
  • Compile detailed reports, maintain accurate records, and contribute to departmental performance monitoring.
  • Participate in out-of-hours on-call duties as required.
  • Collaborate with other council departments, external agencies, and stakeholders to achieve environmental health objectives.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of environmental health policies and strategies.
  • Respond to and investigate infectious disease outbreaks and public health incidents.
  • Deliver presentations and training sessions to businesses and community groups on environmental health topics.

Required Skills

  • A degree or diploma in Environmental Health accredited by the CIEH (Chartered Institute of Environmental Health).
  • Current registration with the Environmental Health Registration Board (EHRB) or eligibility for registration.
  • Demonstrable experience as an Environmental Health Officer in a local authority setting.
  • Thorough knowledge of relevant environmental health legislation, codes of practice, and guidance.
  • Proven ability to conduct effective inspections, investigations, and enforcement actions.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex information clearly.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proficiency in using IT systems for case management, data analysis, and report writing.
  • Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle for business use.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a specialist area such as food hygiene, health & safety, or housing standards.
  • Post-graduate qualification in a related field.
  • Membership of the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH).
