Job Description
Are you a passionate environmental advocate with a knack for turning sustainability visions into tangible projects? Excellence Oyster Bay is seeking an experienced and dynamic Environmental Officer to lead and champion our sustainability initiatives. This pivotal full-time role will see you at the forefront of developing, implementing, and monitoring comprehensive environmental management systems and sustainability projects across our luxury resort. You will be instrumental in ensuring our operations not only comply with local and international environmental regulations but also set new benchmarks for ecological best practices within the hospitality sector. Your expertise will be critical in identifying opportunities for ecological improvement, fostering a culture of environmental stewardship among our staff and guests, and driving the resort’s commitment to responsible tourism. From optimizing energy consumption and water usage to managing waste streams, promoting responsible sourcing, and protecting our delicate coastal ecosystems, your contributions will directly impact our environmental footprint. Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and maintain the resort’s Environmental Management System (EMS) in accordance with relevant standards (e.g., ISO 14001, Green Globe).
- Identify and assess environmental risks and opportunities, proposing and implementing innovative solutions for continuous improvement.
- Lead and manage a portfolio of sustainability projects, including initiatives focused on energy efficiency, water conservation, waste reduction, recycling programs, and biodiversity protection.
- Ensure the resort’s full compliance with all local, national, and international environmental laws, regulations, and company policies.
- Conduct regular environmental audits, inspections, and monitoring activities, preparing detailed reports and actionable plans for corrective and preventive measures.
- Design and deliver comprehensive environmental training and awareness programs for all resort staff, fostering a pervasive culture of sustainability.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with various departments (e.g., Engineering, Housekeeping, Food & Beverage, Procurement) to integrate sustainable practices into daily operations and supply chains.
- Manage relationships and liaise effectively with external stakeholders, including government environmental agencies, local community groups, environmental organizations, and eco-friendly suppliers.
- Monitor, analyze, and report on key environmental performance indicators (KPIs), presenting findings and recommendations to management.
- Research, evaluate, and recommend innovative eco-friendly technologies, materials, and operational practices to enhance the resort's environmental performance.
Required Skills
- Proven experience (minimum 3 years) in environmental management or sustainability roles, preferably within the hospitality or tourism sector.
- Strong knowledge of Jamaican environmental laws, regulations, and permitting processes.
- Proficiency in developing, implementing, and maintaining Environmental Management Systems (EMS).
- Demonstrated project management skills with a successful track record in leading sustainability initiatives from conception to completion.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities, with a data-driven approach.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills, capable of influencing and collaborating across all organizational levels.
- High proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Ability to conduct thorough environmental audits and prepare comprehensive, clear, and concise reports.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Sustainability Studies, Natural Resource Management, or a closely related field.
- Certification in Environmental Management Systems (e.g., ISO 14001 Lead Auditor) or related environmental certifications.
- Experience with green building certifications, sustainable tourism standards (e.g., Green Globe, EarthCheck), or corporate social responsibility reporting.
- Fluency in Spanish, both written and spoken, would be a significant advantage.
- Prior experience working within a luxury resort or premium hospitality environment.
