Job Description
We are seeking a passionate and dedicated Environmental Scientist to join our dynamic team in a pivotal conservation role. This full-time position in Benoni, Gauteng, offers an exciting opportunity to contribute directly to critical environmental projects aimed at protecting and enhancing biodiversity, managing natural resources, and promoting sustainable land use practices across the region. The successful candidate will be instrumental in conducting detailed ecological assessments, developing robust conservation strategies, and ensuring compliance with national and provincial environmental legislation. You will work on diverse projects ranging from biodiversity impact assessments to rehabilitation plans and will be expected to provide expert advice to clients, engage with local communities, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams. This role demands a strong scientific foundation, a commitment to conservation, and excellent problem-solving abilities to navigate complex environmental challenges. Key Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive ecological surveys and biodiversity assessments (fauna, flora, wetlands, aquatic systems) in various terrestrial and aquatic environments.
- Prepare detailed Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs), Basic Assessment Reports (BARs), and other environmental authorization applications, specifically focusing on biodiversity and conservation aspects.
- Develop, implement, and monitor environmental management plans (EMPs) and conservation management plans, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and best practice guidelines.
- Provide expert scientific input and recommendations on conservation-related matters to clients, project teams, and regulatory authorities.
- Undertake data analysis, interpretation, and mapping using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for environmental planning and reporting.
- Engage with stakeholders, including government departments, local communities, and non-governmental organizations, to facilitate effective conservation outcomes.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of environmental methodologies, research, and technical reporting within the company.
Required Skills
- Proven experience in ecological field assessments and data collection methodologies.
- Strong understanding of South African environmental legislation (e.g., NEMA, NEM:BA, CARA) and conservation policies.
- Proficiency in GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS) for spatial analysis and mapping.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for report writing, presentations, and stakeholder engagement.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities with keen attention to detail.
- Valid South African driver's license (Code B/EB) and willingness to travel for field work.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Environmental Science, Conservation Biology, Ecology, or a related field.
- Professional registration with SACNASP (South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions) in an environmental science category.
- Experience with wetland delineations, rehabilitation projects, or alien invasive species management.
- Familiarity with environmental software packages and statistical analysis tools.
