Job Description

Andrews Memorial Hospital is seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Experienced Hospital Ward Nurse to join our dedicated nursing team in Hope Pastures, St. Andrew. This pivotal role involves providing exceptional direct patient care within a dynamic hospital ward setting, catering to patients with a diverse range of medical conditions. As an experienced nurse, you will be instrumental in assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care plans, ensuring adherence to the highest standards of clinical practice and patient safety protocols. You will leverage your extensive clinical knowledge and critical thinking abilities to manage complex patient cases, respond effectively to emergent situations, and provide comprehensive patient education to promote recovery and prevent readmission.

This position calls for a proactive individual who excels in a collaborative environment, working closely with physicians, other nurses, and allied health professionals to deliver coordinated and effective care. You will be a mentor to junior staff, contributing to a culture of continuous learning and professional development within the ward. Beyond direct care, you will be responsible for accurate documentation, medication administration, wound care, and managing patient flow efficiently. Key Responsibilities

  • Provide direct and comprehensive nursing care to patients on the hospital ward, adhering to established policies and procedures.
  • Conduct thorough patient assessments, develop individualized care plans, and evaluate their effectiveness regularly.
  • Administer medications and treatments as prescribed by physicians, ensuring accuracy and documenting all interventions.
  • Monitor and record vital signs, observe patient conditions, and report changes or adverse reactions promptly to the medical team.
  • Collaborate effectively with physicians, therapists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure coordinated and holistic patient care.
  • Educate patients and their families on health conditions, treatment plans, medication management, and self-care techniques.
  • Assist with patient admissions, transfers, and discharges, ensuring a smooth transition of care.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed electronic health records, including nursing notes, medication records, and care plans.
  • Participate in ward rounds, interdisciplinary team meetings, and contribute to care planning discussions.
  • Respond promptly and efficiently to medical emergencies, performing CPR and other life-saving measures as required.
  • Ensure a safe, clean, and therapeutic environment for patients and staff.
  • Mentor and provide guidance to junior nurses and nursing students.
  • Adhere strictly to infection control protocols and patient safety standards.

Required Skills

  • Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in Jamaica
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience working in a hospital ward setting
  • Proficiency in administering medications and performing various nursing procedures (e.g., IV insertion, wound care)
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving abilities
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team
  • Compassionate and patient-centered approach to care
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification
  • Specialty certification in Medical-Surgical Nursing or a related field
  • Experience with electronic health record (EHR) systems
  • Previous experience in a mentorship or charge nurse role
