Job Description

Are you passionate about seafood and dedicated to providing exceptional customer service? Intermart in Goodlands is seeking a skilled and enthusiastic Fishmonger to join our vibrant team. In this pivotal role, you will be the heart of our fresh seafood counter, responsible for preparing, displaying, and selling a wide variety of fish and shellfish. Your expertise will ensure our customers receive the highest quality products, expertly cut and prepared to their specifications, accompanied by friendly advice and serving suggestions. This isn’t just about selling fish; it’s about creating an experience. You will be instrumental in maintaining the pristine condition of our seafood display, managing inventory, and ensuring strict adherence to health and safety standards.

As a Fishmonger at Intermart, you will interact directly with customers, answering questions, offering cooking tips, and building lasting relationships. We are looking for an individual with a keen eye for freshness, excellent knife skills, and a genuine passion for seafood. You’ll be responsible for the daily setup and breakdown of the seafood counter, ensuring all products are correctly priced and labelled. The role also involves managing waste effectively, rotating stock to minimize spoilage, and keeping your workspace impeccably clean and organized. Key Responsibilities

  • Receive, inspect, and store fresh seafood deliveries, ensuring quality and freshness.
  • Clean, scale, fillet, and prepare a variety of fish and shellfish according to customer requests and company standards.
  • Expertly arrange and maintain an attractive and hygienic seafood display, ensuring proper labeling and pricing.
  • Provide friendly, knowledgeable, and engaging customer service, offering cooking advice and product recommendations.
  • Monitor stock levels, rotate products, and minimize waste through careful handling and inventory management.
  • Operate and maintain all cutting equipment and tools safely and effectively.
  • Adhere strictly to all food safety, hygiene, and sanitation regulations (HACCP principles).
  • Assist with inventory counts and order placement as required.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area, including equipment, floors, and display cases.
  • Support other team members and contribute to a positive working environment.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience as a fishmonger or in a similar seafood handling role.
  • Excellent knife skills and ability to perform various fish preparation techniques (filleting, deboning, skinning).
  • Strong knowledge of different types of fish and shellfish, their characteristics, and seasonality.
  • Exceptional customer service and communication skills.
  • Understanding of food safety and hygiene regulations in a retail environment.
  • Ability to work in a cold and wet environment for extended periods.
  • Physical stamina to lift and move heavy boxes of seafood and stand for long hours.
  • Attention to detail and a commitment to quality.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Food Handler's Certificate or relevant food safety training.
  • Previous experience working in a supermarket or high-volume retail setting.
  • Ability to speak multiple languages (e.g., Mauritian Creole, French, English) to assist a diverse customer base.
  • Familiarity with inventory management systems.
