Job Description

WWF Tanzania is seeking a dedicated and physically fit Forestry Monitoring Helper to join our team in Malindi, Zanzibar City. This full-time position offers a unique opportunity to be at the forefront of protecting and restoring Zanzibar’s invaluable forest ecosystems. As a Forestry Monitoring Helper, you will work closely with our experienced forestry and conservation staff, providing essential support in field operations. Your daily tasks will involve hands-on work in diverse forest environments, from coastal thickets to indigenous woodlands, contributing directly to data collection, ecological monitoring, and restoration activities. This role is ideal for individuals who thrive in outdoor settings, possess a keen eye for detail, and are committed to making a tangible difference in environmental conservation. You will play a crucial role in gathering vital information that informs our conservation strategies, helping us understand forest health, identify threats, and measure the impact of our interventions. Key Responsibilities

  • Assist senior forestry officers and technical staff in conducting regular forest patrols and ecological monitoring activities across designated areas in Zanzibar.
  • Collect accurate field data on forest cover, tree species identification, growth rates, signs of disease, and the presence of invasive species using specified methodologies and tools (e.g., GPS, transect lines, measurement tapes).
  • Monitor for and report any signs of illegal activities such as unauthorized logging, charcoal production, poaching, or encroachment on forest land.
  • Participate actively in tree planting initiatives, seedling nursery management, and other forest restoration and rehabilitation projects.
  • Help maintain and calibrate field equipment, ensuring they are in good working order for data collection and monitoring tasks.
  • Support community engagement activities related to forest conservation, awareness campaigns, and sustainable resource management.
  • Accurately record and submit observations and collected data to immediate supervisors in a timely manner.
  • Adhere strictly to all safety protocols and guidelines during field operations to ensure personal and team safety in challenging terrains and weather conditions.
  • Collaborate effectively with team members, local communities, and other stakeholders to achieve project objectives.

Required Skills

  • Proven physical fitness and stamina to conduct extensive field work in varying weather conditions and challenging terrains (e.g., dense forests, humid environments).
  • Basic literacy and numeracy skills for recording data and understanding instructions.
  • Strong observational skills and attention to detail for identifying ecological indicators and potential threats.
  • Ability to follow instructions precisely and work effectively as part of a team.
  • A genuine passion for environmental conservation and a commitment to WWF’s mission.
  • Good communication skills, particularly in basic Swahili, for effective interaction with team members and local communities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience (e.g., 6 months to 1 year) in outdoor work, agriculture, conservation, or similar field activities.
  • Basic knowledge of local tree species, flora, and fauna found in Zanzibar’s ecosystems.
  • Familiarity with using basic field equipment such as GPS devices, compasses, or measuring tools.
  • Completion of secondary education or relevant vocational training.
  • Basic first aid training or willingness to undergo such training.
