Job Description

Career.zycto is excited to partner with a leading healthcare facility in Courtenay, British Columbia, to recruit a highly motivated and experienced Health Information Manager. This pivotal role offers a unique opportunity to lead and optimize health information management services, ensuring the integrity, security, and accessibility of patient data. As a Health Information Manager, you will be instrumental in overseeing all aspects of health record management, including coding, abstracting, transcription, release of information, and data quality. You will be responsible for implementing and maintaining policies and procedures that comply with provincial and federal regulations, professional standards, and best practices in health information management. This position requires a strong leader with exceptional organizational skills, a keen eye for detail, and a deep understanding of healthcare informatics and privacy legislation. Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the daily operations of the Health Information Management (HIM) department, ensuring efficient and effective service delivery.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor HIM policies and procedures in alignment with regulatory requirements (e.g., FOIPPA, PHIPA), accreditation standards, and organizational objectives.
  • Manage the electronic and paper health record systems, ensuring data integrity, accuracy, and completeness.
  • Lead and mentor a team of HIM professionals, fostering a culture of continuous learning, quality improvement, and professional development.
  • Ensure timely and accurate coding, abstracting, and transcription services for all patient encounters.
  • Manage requests for the release of health information, strictly adhering to privacy legislation and ethical guidelines.
  • Participate in inter-departmental committees and projects related to health information systems, data quality, and patient safety.
  • Conduct regular audits and quality checks of health records and HIM processes to identify areas for improvement and ensure compliance.
  • Prepare and present reports on HIM department performance, data quality metrics, and compliance status to senior management.
  • Stay abreast of emerging trends, technologies, and best practices in health information management and healthcare informatics.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Health Information Management, Health Sciences, or a related field.
  • Active certification with the Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA) – Certified in Health Information Management (CHIM).
  • Minimum of 4 years of progressive experience in health information management, with at least 2 years in a leadership or supervisory role.
  • In-depth knowledge of provincial and federal privacy legislation (e.g., FOIPPA, PHIPA) and health record standards.
  • Proficiency in electronic health record (EHR) systems and healthcare information technology.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and team leadership skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage projects, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Health Informatics, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Experience with specific EHR systems used in British Columbia (e.g., Meditech, Cerner).
  • Familiarity with clinical classification systems (e.g., ICD-10-CA, CCI).
  • Previous experience working in a multi-site or regional health authority setting.
