Job Description

Career.zycto is seeking a dedicated and experienced Health & Safety Officer to join our team, specifically overseeing our bustling industrial estate in Gregory Park, Portmore. This pivotal role involves championing a proactive safety culture, ensuring strict adherence to local and international health and safety regulations, and minimizing workplace risks across diverse industrial operations. As a professional, you will be instrumental in developing, implementing, and monitoring robust H&S policies and procedures, conducting comprehensive risk assessments, and delivering essential safety training to all personnel.

You will be the primary point of contact for all health and safety matters, playing a critical role in incident investigation, root cause analysis, and the implementation of corrective and preventive actions. This position requires a keen eye for detail, exceptional communication skills, and the ability to influence and educate employees at all levels. You will work collaboratively with management, department heads, and external regulatory bodies to maintain a safe and compliant working environment. Our industrial estate comprises various facilities, from manufacturing units to warehousing and logistics, presenting a dynamic and challenging environment for an H&S professional to thrive.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive Health & Safety policies and procedures in line with national and international standards.
  • Conduct regular and thorough risk assessments and hazard analyses across the industrial estate to identify potential dangers and propose mitigation strategies.
  • Organize and deliver engaging safety training programs for employees, contractors, and visitors, ensuring awareness and compliance.
  • Lead incident investigations, including near-misses, accidents, and occupational illnesses, determining root causes and recommending corrective actions.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant occupational health and safety legislation, regulations, and industry best practices in Jamaica.
  • Oversee the proper use, maintenance, and inspection of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and other safety-related equipment.
  • Maintain accurate H&S records, prepare reports for management, and present findings and recommendations.
  • Conduct regular site inspections and audits to monitor adherence to safety protocols and identify areas for improvement.
  • Liaise with external regulatory bodies, emergency services, and other stakeholders on all health and safety matters.
  • Promote a strong safety culture through awareness campaigns, communication, and active engagement with all personnel.
  • Monitor environmental compliance related to industrial operations, ensuring responsible waste management and emissions control.

Required Skills

  • In-depth knowledge of occupational health and safety legislation and standards (e.g., OSHA, local Jamaican regulations).
  • Proven experience in conducting comprehensive risk assessments and incident investigations.
  • Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to develop and deliver effective safety training programs.
  • Excellent organizational and time management abilities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Demonstrated ability to influence and persuade at all levels of an organization.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • NEBOSH General Certificate or equivalent professional H&S qualification.
  • First Aid/CPR certification.
  • Experience working in a diverse industrial or manufacturing environment.
  • Knowledge of environmental management systems (e.g., ISO 14001).
