Job Description

This is a pivotal and critical role designed to ensure optimal guest comfort and unwavering operational efficiency across all areas of Virunga Hotel. As a Full-Time HVAC Technician with a specialized focus on Air Conditioning Systems, you will be entrusted with the comprehensive responsibilities of the installation, meticulous maintenance, expert troubleshooting, and efficient repair of all heating, ventilation, and air conditioning units situated throughout our expansive hotel premises. Your specialized technical expertise and diligent efforts will directly and significantly impact our guests’ experience, guaranteeing optimal climate control in all rooms, public common areas, and specialized facilities. This demanding role necessitates a keen eye for minute detail, a profound and comprehensive understanding of fundamental HVAC principles, and an unshakeable commitment to adhering to the highest standards of safety and quality workmanship. You will be expected to execute tasks both independently and as an integral part of our broader, collaborative facilities management team, responding promptly and effectively to service requests, diligently conducting preventative maintenance to avert future issues, and actively contributing to the overall pristine upkeep and functional integrity of the hotel’s vital infrastructure. Key Responsibilities

  • Perform routine preventative maintenance on all HVAC and AC systems, including cleaning, filter replacement, lubrication, and thorough system checks.
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and expertly repair malfunctions in various air conditioning units, encompassing compressors, condensers, evaporators, motors, fan coils, and intricate electrical control components.
  • Install new HVAC and AC units, ensuring proper sizing, meticulous ductwork connection, precise refrigerant line installation, and secure electrical connections in strict accordance with industry standards.
  • Conduct regular, detailed inspections of HVAC equipment to proactively identify potential issues, address wear and tear, and ensure continuous compliance with all relevant safety standards and operational guidelines.
  • Respond promptly and efficiently to emergency service calls related to critical AC breakdowns and urgent climate control issues, often requiring immediate attention.
  • Maintain accurate, comprehensive records of all maintenance performed, repair work undertaken, and all parts used, utilizing our facility management software.
  • Monitor and skillfully adjust building climate control systems to optimize energy consumption while simultaneously ensuring maximum guest comfort.
  • Collaborate seamlessly with other maintenance staff, hotel departments, and external contractors to ensure integrated, smooth, and efficient hotel operations.
  • Adhere strictly to all safety protocols, environmental regulations, and best practices related to refrigerant handling, recovery, and environmentally responsible disposal.
  • Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and support to junior technicians or other hotel staff as needed, fostering a culture of knowledge sharing and continuous improvement.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience (minimum 2 years) as an HVAC Technician, specifically with a strong focus on air conditioning systems.
  • Strong foundational and practical understanding of HVAC electrical and mechanical systems.
  • Proficiency in accurately diagnosing and effectively repairing a wide range of AC system components.
  • In-depth knowledge of refrigerant handling, recovery, charging procedures, and leak detection.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and work confidently with blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting abilities in complex HVAC scenarios.
  • Effective communication skills (oral and written) and the ability to work collaboratively within a diverse team.
  • Physical ability to perform manual labor, lift heavy objects (up to 50 lbs), climb ladders, and work comfortably in various environmental conditions.
  • Valid Rwandan driver's license, if required for procurement of parts or off-site tasks.
  • Demonstrated commitment to adhering to all safety practices and procedures consistently.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Technical diploma or certification in HVAC/Refrigeration technology from a recognized institution.
  • Prior experience working within a hotel, hospitality, or large commercial facility environment.
  • Familiarity with modern building management systems (BMS) for HVAC control.
  • Knowledge of local Rwandan building codes and environmental regulations pertinent to HVAC systems.
  • Rwanda Vocational Training Certificate (WDA TVET) in HVAC or a closely related field.
