Job Description

Are you a skilled and safety-conscious Industrial Painter looking for a challenging opportunity within a robust industrial environment? Tongaat Hulett (Hippo Valley Estates) is seeking a dedicated Industrial Painter to join our dynamic maintenance team in Chiredzi, Masvingo Province. In this crucial role, you will be responsible for applying protective coatings and paints to various structures, machinery, and equipment across our extensive operations, ensuring their longevity, aesthetic appeal, and compliance with safety standards. You will work within a fast-paced environment, contributing directly to the operational efficiency and asset integrity of one of Zimbabwe’s largest agricultural and manufacturing enterprises. This position requires a meticulous approach to surface preparation, expert application techniques, and an unwavering commitment to health and safety protocols. The ideal candidate will possess a strong work ethic, a keen eye for detail, and the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a larger team. This is more than just a painting job; it’s about preserving vital infrastructure and contributing to the sustainable success of a cornerstone industry, ensuring our facilities remain in top condition for optimal productivity and safety.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare various surfaces (metal, concrete, wood) for painting by cleaning, sanding, grinding, sandblasting, and applying appropriate primers or sealants.
  • Mix, match, and apply paints, varnishes, epoxies, and other protective coatings using brushes, rollers, and spray equipment, adhering to specified application methods and safety guidelines.
  • Operate and maintain a variety of painting equipment, including airless sprayers, conventional spray guns, and scaffolding, ensuring all equipment is in good working order.
  • Inspect painted surfaces for defects, touch-ups, and adherence to quality standards and specifications.
  • Implement strict safety procedures, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), handling of hazardous materials, and safe work practices at elevated heights.
  • Read and interpret technical specifications, paint schedules, and safety data sheets (SDS) for various coating materials.
  • Maintain accurate records of work performed, materials used, and equipment maintenance logs.
  • Collaborate with other maintenance team members and supervisors to coordinate painting projects and schedules efficiently.
  • Ensure proper ventilation and environmental precautions are in place during painting operations.
  • Adhere to all company policies, procedures, and relevant industry regulations and standards.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience as an Industrial Painter, preferably in a heavy industry or manufacturing environment.
  • Proficiency in surface preparation techniques, including cleaning, sanding, grinding, and sandblasting.
  • Expertise in various paint application methods (brush, roller, conventional and airless spray).
  • Thorough understanding of different types of industrial coatings, primers, and sealants.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, specifications, and safety data sheets (SDS).
  • Strong commitment to safety protocols and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Good physical stamina, agility, and manual dexterity for working in various positions and at heights.
  • Attention to detail and a high standard of work quality.
  • Basic knowledge of equipment maintenance and troubleshooting for painting tools.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Relevant trade certificate or diploma in industrial painting, protective coatings, or a related field.
  • Experience operating forklifts, elevated work platforms (EWPs), or other access equipment (certification preferred).
  • Knowledge of NACE/SSPC industrial coating standards.
  • First Aid certification.
  • Valid Class 2 or 4 driver's license.
