Job Description

The Gleaner Company Ltd. is seeking a passionate and driven Entry-Level Journalist to join our dynamic news team, based in the vibrant community of Duncans, Trelawny. This is an exceptional opportunity for an aspiring journalist to kickstart their career with a reputable media organization and make a tangible impact on local communities. You will be responsible for covering a wide range of local news stories, from community events and local government decisions to human interest pieces and breaking news, all within the Trelawny parish. As an Entry-Level Journalist, you will be mentored by seasoned professionals and gain invaluable hands-on experience in all facets of news gathering and production. Your work will directly contribute to keeping the residents of Duncans and surrounding areas well-informed and engaged with the issues that matter most to them. Key Responsibilities

  • Research, verify, and report on local news stories, events, and issues within Duncans, Trelawny, and surrounding areas.
  • Conduct interviews with sources, including community members, officials, and experts, to gather accurate and comprehensive information.
  • Write clear, concise, accurate, and engaging news articles, features, and reports for various platforms (print, online).
  • Adhere strictly to journalistic ethics, maintaining objectivity, fairness, and accuracy in all reporting.
  • Work under tight deadlines to deliver timely news content.
  • Develop and maintain contacts within the community to generate story leads.
  • Attend press conferences, community meetings, and public events as required.
  • Assist with basic multimedia content creation (e.g., taking photos, short videos) where applicable.
  • Collaborate with editors and senior journalists to refine stories and improve journalistic skills.

  • Basic knowledge of multimedia tools (photo editing, video capture/editing).
  • Strong understanding of the socio-economic and cultural landscape of Trelawny parish.
