Key Responsibilities

  • Perform routine and specialized laboratory tests across various disciplines (hematology, chemistry, microbiology, serology, parasitology, etc.).
  • Collect, process, and analyze patient samples (blood, urine, tissue, etc.) according to established protocols.
  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment, ensuring proper calibration, functionality, and troubleshooting.
  • Implement and adhere to strict quality control and quality assurance procedures to guarantee reliable test results.
  • Document and report test results accurately, efficiently, and in a timely manner using relevant systems.
  • Maintain detailed records of tests performed, results, and quality control data for audit and reference.
  • Ensure proper handling, storage, and disposal of laboratory specimens and hazardous waste in compliance with safety standards.
  • Adhere to all health and safety regulations, laboratory policies, and national guidelines.
  • Collaborate effectively with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to ensure accurate diagnosis and patient management.
  • Participate in continuing education and training programs to stay updated with advancements in laboratory technology and practices.
  • Manage laboratory inventory, monitor stock levels, and assist in ordering necessary supplies to prevent shortages.

Required Skills

  • Proficiency in performing a wide range of clinical laboratory tests.
  • Strong understanding of laboratory quality control and assurance principles.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities for result interpretation and equipment issues.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and a high level of accuracy in all tasks.
  • Ability to competently operate, calibrate, and troubleshoot various laboratory equipment.
  • In-depth knowledge of health and safety regulations specific to a medical laboratory setting.
  • Effective communication and strong interpersonal skills for interacting with colleagues and patients.
  • Computer literacy for data entry, record keeping, and utilizing laboratory information systems.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Higher Diploma or Bachelor's Degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences from a recognized institution.
  • Registration with the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Board (KMLTTB) with a valid practicing license.
  • At least 2 years of post-qualification experience in a busy clinical laboratory setting.
  • Experience working in a remote or community-based healthcare facility.
  • Familiarity with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) and electronic health records.
