Job Description

We are seeking a diligent and highly skilled Full-Time Lab Technician specializing in Sample Testing to join our committed team at Ramotswa Primary Hospital. In this essential role, you will be at the forefront of patient diagnostics, performing a variety of laboratory tests on biological samples to assist physicians in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases. This position requires meticulous attention to detail, adherence to strict safety protocols, and a strong understanding of laboratory procedures and equipment. You will be responsible for preparing samples, operating sophisticated analytical instruments, interpreting results, and maintaining accurate records. Key Responsibilities

  • Collect, process, and analyze biological samples (blood, urine, tissue, etc.) accurately and efficiently.
  • Perform a wide range of laboratory tests, including hematology, chemistry, microbiology, and serology, using both automated and manual techniques.
  • Operate, calibrate, and maintain laboratory equipment, ensuring optimal performance and troubleshooting minor malfunctions.
  • Prepare reagents, stains, and solutions according to established laboratory protocols.
  • Ensure strict adherence to quality control procedures, record keeping, and safety guidelines (e.g., universal precautions, chemical hygiene plan).
  • Interpret and report test results to medical staff, ensuring accuracy and timely delivery.
  • Maintain detailed and organized records of all tests performed, results, and quality control data.
  • Participate in proficiency testing programs and continuous professional development.
  • Assist in the inventory management of laboratory supplies and reagents.
  • Collaborate with other healthcare professionals to ensure integrated patient care.

Required Skills

  • Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in sample collection, processing, and analysis.
  • Proficiency in operating and maintaining common laboratory equipment.
  • Strong understanding of laboratory safety regulations and quality control procedures.
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in performing tests and recording data.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Competency in basic computer applications for data entry and record keeping.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Registration with a relevant professional body in Botswana (e.g., Botswana Health Professions Council).
  • Experience with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).
  • Familiarity with specific diagnostic platforms used in a hospital setting.
  • Previous experience in a public health or hospital laboratory environment.
  • Knowledge of local disease patterns relevant to the South-East District.
