Job Description
Career.zycto is seeking a highly creative and technically proficient Lighting Designer & Stage Setup Specialist to join our dynamic production team in Nairobi. Based near the iconic Giraffe Centre, you will be instrumental in bringing our diverse range of events, theatrical productions, corporate functions, and experiential installations to life through exceptional lighting design and meticulous stage management. This role demands a keen eye for aesthetics, a deep understanding of lighting technology, and hands-on experience in setting up and operating complex stage environments.
As a Lighting Designer, you will be responsible for conceptualizing and executing lighting schemes that enhance the mood, atmosphere, and visual impact of each project. You will work closely with directors, event planners, and other technical crew members to translate artistic visions into tangible, breathtaking realities. Beyond design, your expertise in stage setup will be crucial. This includes rigging, power distribution, equipment placement, and ensuring all technical elements are safely and efficiently installed for optimal performance. You will troubleshoot technical issues on-site, perform maintenance on equipment, and manage inventory to ensure all lighting and stage elements are always production-ready.

Key Responsibilities
- Design and implement creative lighting plots and schemes for a variety of events, including concerts, theatrical plays, corporate functions, and art installations.
- Operate lighting consoles and related equipment during live events, ensuring seamless transitions and adherence to design specifications.
- Lead and assist with the safe and efficient setup, rigging, and dismantling of all stage and lighting equipment, including trusses, fixtures, consoles, and cabling.
- Conduct pre-production meetings with clients, directors, and production teams to understand project requirements and translate concepts into technical designs.
- Perform routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of lighting equipment to ensure optimal performance and longevity.
- Manage and maintain inventory of lighting fixtures, cables, accessories, and other stage equipment.
- Ensure strict adherence to all safety regulations and best practices related to electrical systems, rigging, and stage operations.
- Collaborate effectively with sound engineers, video technicians, and other crew members to integrate lighting design seamlessly into overall production.
- Stay updated with the latest trends, technologies, and innovations in lighting design and stage production.
Required Skills
- Proficiency in lighting design software (e.g., AutoCAD, Vectorworks, Lightwright, Capture)
- Expertise in operating digital lighting consoles (e.g., MA Lighting, ETC, Avolites)
- Strong understanding of DMX, Art-Net, and other lighting control protocols
- Comprehensive knowledge of electrical systems, power distribution, and rigging principles for stage environments
- Proven experience with various lighting fixtures, including LED, conventional, and intelligent lights
- Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to troubleshoot technical issues under pressure
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills for collaborative teamwork
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as required by production schedules
- Physical ability to lift heavy equipment and work at heights
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or diploma in Technical Theatre, Lighting Design, or a related field
- Certification in rigging and theatrical safety (e.g., ETCP certification)
- Experience with media servers and video projection integration with lighting systems
- Portfolio demonstrating a range of successful lighting design projects
- First Aid and CPR certification
