Job Description
We are actively seeking a highly motivated, dedicated, and physically capable Livestock Handler to join our dynamic team at the KALRO Embu Center research ranch. This is a crucial, hands-on position that involves the daily care, feeding, and comprehensive management of various livestock species, primarily cattle, sheep, and goats, within a structured research and demonstration environment. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in ensuring the optimal health, welfare, and productivity of our animal stock, thereby directly contributing to our overarching research objectives and demonstration efforts aimed at agricultural advancement. Your responsibilities will include diligently implementing established feeding schedules, assisting with vital animal health protocols such as vaccinations and treatments, maintaining impeccably clean and safe enclosures, and accurately documenting all animal observations. Key Responsibilities
- Execute daily feeding and watering of all livestock according to established protocols and precise nutritional plans.
- Maintain the cleanliness and hygiene of livestock housing, pens, and pastures to ensure optimal animal welfare and prevent disease.
- Assist veterinarians and animal health technicians with routine health checks, vaccination programs, and the treatment of sick or injured animals.
- Monitor livestock continuously for any signs of illness, injury, distress, or unusual behavioral changes, and report observations promptly to supervisors.
- Support animal handling procedures for various activities including weighing, tagging, breeding, artificial insemination, and biological sample collection.
- Operate and perform routine maintenance on farm equipment essential for livestock operations, such as feed mixers, mowers, and small utility vehicles/tractors.
- Maintain accurate and detailed records on feed consumption, animal health records, weight gain, breeding cycles, and other relevant production parameters.
- Actively participate in rotational grazing management and other pasture maintenance activities to ensure sustainable land use.
- Ensure strict compliance with all established safety regulations and animal welfare standards to create a safe working environment for both staff and animals.
- Perform general farm duties as required to support the seamless overall operation of the ranch and research activities.
Required Skills
- Proven practical experience in handling and caring for various livestock species (e.g., cattle, sheep, goats).
- Basic understanding of animal behavior, welfare principles, and husbandry practices.
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting and working outdoors in diverse weather conditions.
- Strong observational skills with a keen eye for detail in monitoring animal health and behavior.
- Ability to meticulously follow instructions and work both independently and collaboratively within a team.
- Basic literacy and numeracy skills for accurate record-keeping and data entry.
- Demonstrated commitment to animal welfare, ethical treatment, and responsible animal care.
- Valid Kenyan driver's license (Class B or G) is advantageous for operating light farm vehicles.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certificate or Diploma in Animal Health, Livestock Production, or a closely related agricultural field.
- Prior experience working in a research-oriented agricultural institution or a large-scale commercial farm setting.
- Knowledge of common livestock diseases, parasites, and basic animal first aid techniques.
- Familiarity with operating and performing minor maintenance on essential farm machinery and equipment.
- Fluency in both Swahili and English for effective communication.
