Job Description

As a Loan Officer at SMEP Microfinance Bank in Kisumu, you will be at the forefront of our mission, directly impacting the economic well-being of individuals and businesses in the community. This dynamic role involves identifying potential clients, assessing their financial needs, guiding them through the loan application process, and ensuring timely loan disbursement and recovery. You will be responsible for building and maintaining strong relationships with clients, understanding their business cycles, and offering tailor-made financial advice that promotes sustainable growth. Your work will not only involve meeting sales targets but also playing a crucial role in financial literacy and client support, helping our clients navigate their financial journeys successfully. This position demands a proactive approach, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to serving our community with integrity and professionalism. You will operate within Kisumu and its environs, deeply engaging with the local market to expand our reach and uphold SMEP’s reputation as a trusted financial partner, contributing directly to the growth of the bank’s loan portfolio and its positive impact on the local economy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Identify and recruit potential clients within Kisumu and surrounding areas through field visits, community outreach, and networking.
  • Conduct thorough client appraisals, business analyses, and credit assessments to determine loan eligibility and capacity.
  • Disburse loans efficiently and ensure adherence to all procedural guidelines and regulatory requirements.
  • Monitor loan utilization, repayment schedules, and proactively manage loan portfolios to minimize default rates.
  • Follow up on overdue loans and implement effective recovery strategies, engaging clients with empathy and professionalism.
  • Provide financial advisory services to clients, educating them on best financial practices and appropriate product offerings.
  • Maintain accurate client records and prepare regular reports on portfolio performance, market trends, and client feedback.
  • Actively participate in marketing activities and campaigns to promote SMEP’s financial products and services to a wider audience.
  • Ensure compliance with all internal policies, procedures, and relevant banking regulations.
  • Build and maintain strong, trust-based relationships with clients, community leaders, and local stakeholders.

Required Skills

  • Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Banking, Economics, or a related field from a recognized institution.
  • Minimum 2 years of proven experience in a similar role within a microfinance institution or financial services sector.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet and exceed sales and loan portfolio targets.
  • Strong understanding of credit analysis, risk management, and loan recovery processes.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage diverse clientele.
  • High level of integrity, professionalism, and ethical conduct.
  • Proficiency in computer applications, especially Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced and results-oriented environment.
  • Fluency in English and Swahili is essential.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.
  • Experience with a core banking system or microfinance software.
  • Prior experience working specifically in the Kisumu region and understanding of local market dynamics.
  • A clean driving license with motorbike riding experience.
  • Knowledge of local languages (e.g., Dholuo).
  • Certification in credit management or a related professional course.
