Job Description

Memories of Zanzibar is seeking a dedicated Local Craft Market Seller Helper to join our passionate team in Beit al Ras, Zanzibar City. This full-time role offers a unique chance to work directly with beautiful, authentic Zanzibari crafts, interact with diverse customers from around the globe, and contribute to the economic empowerment of local artisans. You will be an essential part of our daily operations, helping to create an inviting atmosphere where customers can explore and appreciate the island’s unique artistic expressions. Your day will be dynamic, ranging from engaging with visitors, assisting with sales transactions, maintaining the appealing display of our products, to ensuring the overall cleanliness and order of our shop. Key Responsibilities

  • Warmly greet and assist customers, providing information about products, their origins, and the stories behind them.
  • Support the main seller with sales transactions, including handling cash and mobile payments accurately.
  • Assist with the merchandising and display of craft items, ensuring they are attractively presented and well-stocked.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and tidiness of the shop floor, display areas, and storage spaces.
  • Help with inventory management, including receiving new stock, tagging items, and organizing storage.
  • Provide basic customer service, resolving minor inquiries or escalating more complex issues to management.
  • Promote a positive and welcoming atmosphere for all customers, encouraging exploration and engagement with local crafts.
  • Assist in opening and closing procedures of the market stall/shop as required.

Required Skills

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a friendly and approachable demeanor.
  • Basic numeracy skills for handling transactions and counting change.
  • Strong sense of responsibility, punctuality, and reliability.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, customer-focused retail environment.
  • A genuine interest in Zanzibari culture, arts, and crafts.
  • Fluency in English and Swahili.
  • Physical stamina to stand for extended periods and lift light to moderately heavy items.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a retail, market, or customer service role.
  • Knowledge of traditional Zanzibari crafts and their cultural significance.
  • Ability to speak additional languages (e.g., French, German, Italian, Spanish) is a significant plus.
  • Experience with point-of-sale (POS) systems or mobile payment platforms.
