Job Description
Are you a highly skilled and experienced Mechanical Engineer looking to apply your expertise in a dynamic and intellectually stimulating environment? The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, invites applications for a professional Mechanical Engineer to join our dedicated Facilities Management team. This pivotal role is essential for ensuring the optimal functioning, maintenance, and strategic development of the campus’s complex industrial plant systems and mechanical infrastructure. You will be instrumental in maintaining the reliability, efficiency, and safety of critical utilities, including our power generation and distribution systems, extensive HVAC networks, water treatment and distribution plants, and a wide array of specialized mechanical equipment vital for our laboratories and academic operations.
As a Professional Mechanical Engineer, you will be tasked with more than just maintenance; you will be a key contributor to strategic planning, energy management initiatives, and the implementation of modern engineering solutions to enhance campus sustainability and operational resilience. This involves comprehensive oversight from design consultation to commissioning of new projects, as well as the continuous improvement of existing systems. You will play a crucial role in troubleshooting complex mechanical failures, developing preventative maintenance programs, and ensuring strict adherence to local and international engineering standards and safety protocols. Key Responsibilities
- Design, specify, and manage the installation, maintenance, and repair of mechanical systems, equipment, and industrial plant components across the campus.
- Develop and implement robust preventative and predictive maintenance programs for HVAC systems, boilers, pumps, chillers, generators, and other critical mechanical infrastructure.
- Conduct detailed engineering analyses, fault diagnosis, and troubleshooting to resolve complex mechanical issues efficiently and effectively.
- Oversee and manage engineering projects from conception through to completion, including scope definition, budget management, contractor supervision, and quality assurance.
- Ensure strict compliance with all relevant engineering standards, safety regulations, and environmental guidelines.
- Lead initiatives for energy conservation, system optimization, and the adoption of sustainable engineering practices to reduce operational costs and environmental footprint.
- Prepare comprehensive technical reports, operational manuals, and project documentation.
- Collaborate with other engineering disciplines, facilities staff, and campus stakeholders to integrate mechanical systems seamlessly with overall campus infrastructure.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineering staff and technicians.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution
- Proficiency in mechanical design software (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks)
- Strong understanding of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and material science
- Expertise in HVAC, plumbing, power generation, and industrial plant operations
- Proven experience with preventative maintenance systems and troubleshooting industrial equipment
- Excellent project management and organizational skills
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment
- Knowledge of relevant local and international engineering codes and standards
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field
- Professional Engineering (PE) license or eligibility for registration with the Professional Engineers Registration Board of Jamaica (PERB)
- Certifications in project management (e.g., PMP) or specific industrial plant technologies
- Experience in an academic, healthcare, or large institutional environment
- Demonstrated experience with Building Management Systems (BMS) and energy management platforms
