Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Midwife to join our Maternal Health team in the bustling University District of St. Andrew. This professional role is pivotal in delivering comprehensive, culturally sensitive, and evidence-based care to women throughout their pregnancy, childbirth, and postnatal period. As a Midwife at UHWI, you will empower mothers, support families, and contribute significantly to positive birth outcomes within a challenging yet rewarding clinical environment. You will work within a multidisciplinary team, upholding the highest standards of clinical practice and patient safety, and will be expected to adapt to diverse patient needs while maintaining professional composure and empathy. This position offers a unique opportunity to impact maternal and infant health positively in Jamaica and the wider Caribbean.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide expert antenatal care, including health assessments, education on pregnancy, birth preparation, and identifying potential risks.
- Manage labor and delivery processes, offering continuous support, monitoring, and interventions as necessary, in alignment with established protocols.
- Deliver comprehensive postnatal care to mothers and newborns, including breastfeeding support, neonatal checks, and family planning advice.
- Maintain accurate and meticulous patient records, ensuring confidentiality and adherence to hospital policies and national guidelines.
- Collaborate effectively with obstetricians, nurses, paediatricians, and other healthcare professionals to ensure integrated patient care.
- Educate women and their families on various aspects of maternal health, including nutrition, hygiene, infant care, and sexual health.
- Respond promptly and effectively to obstetric emergencies, initiating appropriate care and escalating to senior medical staff when required.
- Actively participate in departmental meetings, training sessions, and continuous professional development initiatives.
Required Skills
- Registered Midwife license in Jamaica (or eligibility for registration)
- Minimum of 3 years of post-registration experience in maternal health/obstetrics
- Proven ability to manage both normal and high-risk pregnancies and deliveries
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a compassionate approach
- Strong clinical assessment and critical thinking abilities
- Proficiency in emergency obstetric care and neonatal resuscitation techniques
- Commitment to patient safety and evidence-based practice
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Midwifery or equivalent advanced diploma
- Certifications in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) or Advanced Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)
- Experience in a teaching hospital or tertiary care setting
- Proficiency in utilizing electronic health record systems
