Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Midwife to join our bustling Maternity Unit at Tonota Primary Hospital. This pivotal role requires an individual with a profound commitment to maternal and neonatal health, capable of providing holistic care across the full spectrum of pregnancy, childbirth, and the postnatal period. As an experienced Midwife, you will be instrumental in delivering exceptional patient care, managing complex cases with confidence, and offering expert guidance to expectant and new mothers. Your expertise will be vital in ensuring safe deliveries, promoting positive birth experiences, and supporting new families in their journey. This position calls for a compassionate professional who can work autonomously, exercise sound clinical judgment, and collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary team. You will be expected to contribute to the continuous improvement of our maternity services, participate in health promotion initiatives, and potentially mentor junior staff, fostering a culture of excellence and patient-centred care within our community hospital. Key Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive antenatal care, including health education, risk assessment, and screening, to pregnant women.
  • Manage labour and delivery, conducting normal spontaneous vaginal births and assisting medical officers in more complex deliveries.
  • Deliver immediate postnatal care to mothers and newborns, ensuring their well-being and identifying potential complications.
  • Conduct thorough newborn assessments, initiate breastfeeding support, and educate parents on infant care.
  • Respond effectively to obstetric emergencies, performing immediate life-saving interventions when necessary.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential patient records, ensuring compliance with hospital policies and national guidelines.
  • Collaborate with obstetricians, pediatricians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to ensure integrated patient care.
  • Act as a resource and mentor for less experienced midwives and student nurses, fostering professional development.
  • Participate in health promotion activities within the community, focusing on maternal and child health.
  • Adhere strictly to infection control protocols and maintain a clean, safe, and sterile environment.

Required Skills

  • Diploma or Degree in Midwifery from a recognized institution.
  • Current registration with the Botswana General Nursing Council (BGNC) as a Midwife.
  • A minimum of 4 years of post-qualification experience as a Midwife, preferably in a hospital maternity unit.
  • Demonstrated expertise in managing normal and high-risk pregnancies and deliveries.
  • Proficiency in emergency obstetric and neonatal care procedures.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and empathy skills.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and make sound clinical decisions.
  • Strong organizational and record-keeping abilities.
  • Computer literacy (MS Office Suite).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced Diploma or Degree in Midwifery.
  • Specialized training or certification in areas such as Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP), or Fetal Monitoring.
  • Previous experience in a leadership or mentorship role within a maternity setting.
  • Fluency in Setswana and English.
