Job Description

Alectra Utilities is seeking a highly skilled and proactive Network Systems Administrator to join our innovative and growing Information Technology team. This remote position offers the flexibility to work from your home office while remaining an integral part of our Guelph-based operations, ensuring seamless connectivity and robust infrastructure for our critical services. As a Network Systems Administrator, you will be instrumental in designing, implementing, maintaining, and troubleshooting our extensive network infrastructure, playing a vital role in the reliable delivery of electricity to our customers.

In this role, you will be responsible for the health, performance, and security of our enterprise network, including WAN, LAN, Wi-Fi, and server systems. You will work with a diverse range of technologies, from firewalls and routers to virtual servers and cloud environments, ensuring optimal uptime and responsiveness. This position requires a candidate who is not only technically proficient but also possesses strong problem-solving abilities, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to continuous improvement. You’ll collaborate with various departments, providing expert support and contributing to strategic IT initiatives that drive operational efficiency and digital transformation within the utilities sector. Key Responsibilities

  • Design, configure, and maintain local area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WANs), and other data communications systems, with a focus on high availability and security.
  • Monitor network performance and security, identifying and resolving issues proactively to ensure optimal operation of all network components.
  • Implement and manage network security measures, including firewalls, intrusion detection/prevention systems, VPNs, and access controls.
  • Administer and support Windows Server environments, Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, and virtualization platforms (e.g., VMware, Hyper-V).
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive documentation for network configurations, processes, and troubleshooting procedures.
  • Collaborate with IT teams and other departments to plan and implement network-related projects and upgrades.
  • Provide advanced technical support and troubleshooting for network connectivity, server, and system-related issues.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation for critical network and system incidents, ensuring timely resolution.
  • Stay current with emerging network technologies and best practices, recommending solutions that enhance efficiency and security.

Required Skills

  • Minimum of 3 years of hands-on experience in network administration and systems support.
  • Proficiency with Cisco networking equipment (routers, switches, firewalls) and related protocols (TCP/IP, OSPF, BGP, VLANs).
  • Strong experience with Microsoft Windows Server operating systems, Active Directory, and Group Policy.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of virtualization technologies (VMware ESXi, Microsoft Hyper-V).
  • Experience with network security principles and technologies, including VPNs, firewalls (e.g., Palo Alto, Fortinet), and intrusion detection systems.
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and diagnostic skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a remote work setting.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • Industry certifications such as CCNA, CCNP, MCSA, or MCSE.
  • Experience with cloud networking (Azure, AWS) and hybrid cloud environments.
  • Familiarity with PowerShell scripting for automation.
  • Experience working in a regulated industry, such as utilities or critical infrastructure.
