Key Responsibilities

  • Assist veterinarians and veterinary technicians during examinations, procedures, and treatments, ensuring patient safety and comfort.
  • Prepare and meticulously clean examination rooms, surgical areas, and kennels, maintaining a sterile and organized environment.
  • Restrain animals gently and safely for various procedures, prioritizing their comfort and minimizing stress.
  • Monitor hospitalized animals closely, observing changes in behavior or condition and promptly reporting them to veterinary staff.
  • Dispense medications as accurately directed by the veterinarian, ensuring correct dosage and providing clear instructions to clients.
  • Handle client communication, including answering phones, scheduling appointments, and providing general information with a helpful demeanor.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential patient records, including appointment details, client information, and medical notes.
  • Perform general clinic maintenance duties, such as laundry, stocking supplies, and ensuring overall cleanliness of common areas.
  • Educate clients on basic pet care, nutrition, preventative health measures, and post-procedure instructions.
  • Process payments and manage billing, maintaining strict confidentiality and accuracy.

Required Skills

  • Minimum 1 year of experience in an animal care setting (e.g., veterinary clinic, animal shelter, pet store).
  • High School Diploma or equivalent education.
  • Genuine passion for animal welfare and a strong commitment to providing excellent patient care.
  • Ability to handle and restrain animals of various sizes and temperaments safely and compassionately.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a patient and empathetic approach towards clients.
  • Strong organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment and handle stressful situations calmly and professionally.
  • Proficiency in basic computer skills for record-keeping and scheduling.
  • Fluency in English and Mauritian Creole is essential; proficiency in French is a strong advantage.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification as a Veterinary Assistant or completion of a related animal science program.
  • Prior experience with veterinary software (e.g., Impromed, Cornerstone, eVetPractice).
  • Fundamental knowledge of basic medical terminology and animal anatomy.
  • Experience with surgical preparation and post-operative patient care.
  • Previous experience working in a multi-species veterinary clinic.
