Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Prototype Engineer to join our dynamic team, working on the cutting edge of product development. As a Prototype Engineer, you will be instrumental in bridging the gap between theoretical designs and manufacturable products. You will be responsible for conceptualizing, designing, and fabricating functional prototypes that demonstrate innovative solutions across various stages of the product lifecycle, from early-stage concept validation to pre-production models. This role demands a blend of creativity, meticulous attention to detail, and a hands-on approach to problem-solving. You will collaborate closely with industrial designers, mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, and manufacturing teams to ensure that prototypes not only meet functional and aesthetic requirements but are also feasible for mass production. Your day-to-day will involve utilizing advanced prototyping techniques, including 3D printing, CNC machining, laser cutting, and traditional fabrication methods. You will conduct rigorous testing, analyze performance data, and provide critical feedback to design teams, driving iterative improvements. The ideal candidate will thrive in a fast-paced environment, possess excellent communication skills, and have a passion for turning complex ideas into tangible, working solutions. This is an unparalleled opportunity to significantly impact the development of next-generation products, working with state-of-the-art technology and a team dedicated to innovation and excellence in Bayview Village, Toronto.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, build, and test functional prototypes from initial concepts through to pre-production models, ensuring design intent and performance specifications are met.
- Select appropriate materials and fabrication methods based on design requirements, cost, timeline, and manufacturability considerations.
- Operate and maintain a variety of prototyping equipment, including advanced 3D printers (SLA, FDM, SLS), CNC machines, laser cutters, and precision hand tools.
- Collaborate extensively with industrial designers, mechanical engineers, and electrical engineers to refine designs for functionality, aesthetics, and ease of manufacturability.
- Conduct thorough functional and performance testing on prototypes, analyze results meticulously, and provide detailed, constructive feedback to development teams.
- Document prototyping processes, design iterations, test data, and final specifications clearly and concisely for future reference and production handoff.
- Identify and proactively troubleshoot design and fabrication challenges, proposing innovative and practical solutions to overcome technical hurdles.
- Stay abreast of new and emerging prototyping technologies, materials, and advanced manufacturing processes to continually enhance our capabilities.
- Support the seamless transition of validated prototypes to production engineering and manufacturing teams, ensuring successful scaling.
Required Skills
- Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Fusion 360, AutoCAD, Inventor) for design and modeling.
- Strong hands-on fabrication skills, including machining, 3D printing, assembly, and various finishing techniques.
- Demonstrated experience with a wide range of prototyping techniques and materials selection.
- Solid understanding of mechanical design principles, material science, and modern manufacturing processes.
- Ability to accurately read and interpret complex technical drawings and schematics.
- Exceptional problem-solving aptitude with a strong attention to detail and quality.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and collaboration skills to work effectively within cross-functional teams.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design, or a closely related technical field.
- Experience with electronic prototyping (e.g., soldering, basic PCB design, fundamental circuit understanding).
- Familiarity with rapid tooling and low-volume manufacturing techniques.
- Proficiency in CAM software for CNC machining operations.
- A compelling portfolio demonstrating a range of successful prototyping projects from concept to completion.
Perks & Benefits
- Competitive salary and performance-based bonuses.
- Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance package.
- Generous paid time off, including vacation, sick leave, and holidays.
- Opportunities for professional development, continuous learning, and advanced training.
- Access to state-of-the-art prototyping labs and cutting-edge equipment.
- A collaborative, innovative, and supportive work environment.
