Job Description
Food For The Poor Jamaica is seeking a dedicated and proactive Public Health Officer to lead and execute critical awareness campaigns on a contract basis in Spanish Town, Saint Catherine Parish. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced public health professional to directly impact community well-being by designing, implementing, and evaluating health education programs and campaigns. The Public Health Officer will be instrumental in promoting positive health behaviours, disseminating vital health information, and mobilizing community participation in public health initiatives targeting various health challenges prevalent in the region. This role requires strong communication skills, a deep understanding of public health principles, and a commitment to serving underserved communities. The successful candidate will work closely with community leaders, local health authorities, and FFTP’s program teams to ensure the effective reach and impact of our health awareness efforts. Your work will directly contribute to empowering individuals with knowledge and resources to lead healthier lives, fostering a healthier and more resilient Spanish Town.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, plan, and implement comprehensive public health awareness campaigns tailored to the specific needs of communities in Spanish Town and surrounding areas.
- Develop engaging and culturally appropriate health education materials, including flyers, posters, presentations, and digital content.
- Conduct community outreach, workshops, and educational sessions on various public health topics (e.g., sanitation, nutrition, chronic disease prevention, maternal and child health, hygiene).
- Collaborate with local health agencies, community groups, schools, and volunteers to expand the reach and effectiveness of campaigns.
- Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of awareness campaigns, collecting data, and preparing detailed reports on progress, challenges, and outcomes.
- Identify community health needs and gaps in knowledge through needs assessments and community engagement.
- Manage project timelines, resources, and budgets for assigned campaigns, ensuring efficient and impactful execution.
- Act as a key liaison between Food For The Poor Jamaica and local community stakeholders on public health matters.
- Provide regular updates and reports to the Program Manager on campaign activities and community impact.
Required Skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking and presentation abilities.
- Proven experience in designing and implementing public health awareness campaigns or health education programs.
- Strong project management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse community groups, showing cultural sensitivity and empathy.
- Proficiency in data collection, analysis, and report writing.
- Competency in using standard office software (Microsoft Office Suite: Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Valid driver's license and access to reliable transportation for community travel.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Public Health, Community Health, Health Promotion, or a related field.
- Previous experience working with non-profit organizations or NGOs in a community development or public health context.
- Familiarity with the specific health challenges and cultural nuances of communities in Saint Catherine Parish, Jamaica.
- Experience in grant writing or fundraising for public health initiatives.
- Knowledge of local health policies and structures in Jamaica.
