Berklee College of Music is seeking a highly skilled and enthusiastic Full-Time Recording Studio Technician to join our dynamic team in Boston, MA. In this pivotal role, you will be instrumental in the daily operation, maintenance, and technical support of Berklee’s cutting-edge recording studios and associated audio facilities. You will ensure that our studios are always ready for use, providing a seamless and high-quality environment for student projects, faculty productions, and academic coursework. This position requires a blend of technical expertise, meticulous problem-solving abilities, and excellent interpersonal skills to assist a diverse community of users, ranging from novice students to experienced faculty members.
You will be responsible for the setup, configuration, troubleshooting, and repair of a wide array of audio hardware and software, ensuring that all equipment functions optimally. Your role will involve performing routine maintenance, managing equipment inventory, and offering comprehensive technical guidance and support to students and faculty, empowering them to fully utilize our facilities for their creative and educational endeavors. Key Responsibilities
- Perform daily setup, calibration, and operational checks of recording studio equipment, including consoles, microphones, outboard gear, and monitoring systems.
- Provide immediate technical support and troubleshooting for all audio hardware and software within assigned studios, ensuring minimal downtime and swift resolution of issues.
- Assist students and faculty with the proper operation of studio equipment, digital audio workstations (DAWs), signal flow, and recording techniques.
- Conduct routine maintenance, cleaning, and preventative care for all studio gear to ensure optimal performance, extend equipment longevity, and maintain studio readiness.
- Manage and track studio equipment inventory, including ordering, receiving, organizing cables, accessories, and spare parts.
- Diagnose and repair minor technical faults; coordinate efficiently with external service providers for more complex repairs or specialized maintenance as needed.
- Ensure studios comply with all safety standards and best practices for equipment handling and usage, fostering a safe working and learning environment.
- Maintain accurate and detailed records of equipment usage, maintenance logs, and troubleshooting steps for future reference and continuous improvement.
- Collaborate proactively with faculty and staff to develop, implement, and integrate new studio technologies and optimize workflows.
- Provide comprehensive orientation and training to users on studio policies, procedures, and equipment operation, promoting self-sufficiency and responsible usage.
Required Skills
- Proficiency with professional digital audio workstations (e.g., Pro Tools, Logic Pro, Ableton Live, Cubase).
- Strong understanding of analog and digital audio signal flow, acoustics, and studio wiring principles.
- Extensive experience with studio hardware including mixing consoles (both analog and digital), microphones, preamps, compressors, EQs, and effects processors.
- Exceptional troubleshooting skills for both hardware and software issues within a complex audio environment.
- Ability to perform basic soldering and cable repair.
- Solid knowledge of macOS and Windows operating systems in a professional audio context, including network configurations.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with a patient, helpful, and clear demeanor when assisting users.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team in a fast-paced academic environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Audio Engineering, Music Production, Sound Design, or a closely related technical field.
- Certifications in Pro Tools, Logic Pro, or other relevant audio software/hardware platforms.
- Previous experience working in an educational institution, a commercial recording studio, or a professional broadcast facility.
- Familiarity with network audio protocols (e.g., Dante, AVB, AES67).
- Basic understanding of music theory, composition, and arrangement.
- Experience with live sound reinforcement systems and event production.
