Job Description
Chuka University invites applications for the position of Research Assistant (Academic) to support various ongoing and new study projects within our faculties. This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and meticulous individual to contribute to cutting-edge research in a supportive academic environment. The Research Assistant will play a crucial role in the successful execution of diverse research initiatives, ranging from social sciences and humanities to applied sciences and technology. You will work closely with lead researchers, faculty members, and student groups, gaining invaluable experience in various stages of the research lifecycle. This role requires strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and a passion for academic inquiry. Key Responsibilities
- Conduct thorough literature reviews and synthesize relevant information to support research proposals and reports.
- Assist in the development and refinement of research methodologies, data collection tools, and protocols.
- Collect primary data through surveys, interviews, focus group discussions, and observations, ensuring data quality and ethical guidelines are adhered to.
- Organize, clean, and enter both qualitative and quantitative data into appropriate databases or software.
- Perform basic data analysis under the guidance of lead researchers, utilizing statistical software (e.g., SPSS, R, STATA) or qualitative analysis tools (e.g., NVivo).
- Prepare preliminary drafts of research reports, articles, presentations, and other dissemination materials.
- Assist in the preparation and submission of research ethics applications and ensure compliance with all ethical approvals.
- Coordinate and schedule research meetings, workshops, and fieldwork activities.
- Manage research project documentation, including consent forms, data logs, and project correspondence.
- Contribute to grant writing and proposal development for future research funding opportunities.
- Provide administrative support to the research team as needed, including procurement of research materials and logistical arrangements.
Required Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant academic discipline (e.g., Social Sciences, Health Sciences, Environmental Science, Education, Agriculture).
- Demonstrated knowledge of research methodologies, including both qualitative and quantitative approaches.
- Proficiency in data collection techniques and data management.
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Ability to work independently and as part of a diverse research team.
- Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree or currently enrolled in a Master's program in a relevant field.
- Previous experience as a Research Assistant in an academic or research institution.
- Familiarity with statistical analysis software (e.g., SPSS, R, STATA) or qualitative analysis software (e.g., NVivo).
- Experience in writing research reports or contributing to academic publications.
- Knowledge of local languages/dialects spoken in Tharaka-Nithi County.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a research setting.
