Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Research Scientist to join our dynamic team at Blanket Mine. This is an exceptional opportunity for an individual passionate about applying scientific principles to real-world mining challenges in a vital sector of Zimbabwe’s economy. The Research Scientist will play a critical role in conducting applied research aimed at optimizing various aspects of our gold mining operations. This includes, but is not limited to, improving geological understanding, enhancing metallurgical recovery processes, developing more sustainable environmental management practices, and exploring innovative safety protocols. You will be responsible for designing and executing experiments, collecting and analysing complex data, interpreting results, and presenting findings to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. The role demands a strong foundation in scientific methodology, excellent analytical capabilities, and the ability to work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team of geologists, engineers, and environmental specialists. You will be expected to stay abreast of the latest advancements in mining technology and scientific research, actively contributing to our continuous improvement initiatives and ensuring our operations remain at the forefront of industry best practices. Key Responsibilities
- Design and implement scientific research projects related to gold mining, metallurgy, environmental science, and safety.
- Collect, process, and analyze complex geological, metallurgical, and environmental data using advanced statistical and analytical techniques.
- Develop and validate new methodologies, processes, and technologies to improve operational efficiency and sustainability.
- Prepare comprehensive research reports, technical papers, and presentations for internal stakeholders and external forums.
- Collaborate effectively with geologists, mining engineers, metallurgists, and environmental specialists to integrate research findings into practical applications.
- Monitor and evaluate the performance of new processes and technologies implemented as a result of research.
- Ensure all research activities comply with safety regulations, environmental standards, and company policies.
- Provide scientific expertise and guidance on technical challenges and strategic initiatives.
- Mentor junior staff and contribute to a culture of continuous learning and scientific inquiry.
Required Skills
- PhD or Master’s degree in Geology, Metallurgy, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Science, or a related scientific discipline.
- Minimum of 4 years of progressive experience in applied research, preferably within the mining or heavy industry sector.
- Proven expertise in experimental design, statistical analysis, and data interpretation.
- Proficiency in laboratory techniques relevant to mineral processing or environmental analysis.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a meticulous attention to detail.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex scientific information clearly.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, multi-disciplinary team environment.
- Demonstrated experience with scientific software and data analysis tools (e.g., R, Python, MATLAB, JMP, Minitab).
Preferred Qualifications
- PhD in a relevant field.
- Experience with geochemical modeling or advanced mineralogical analysis techniques.
- Familiarity with environmental impact assessments and sustainable mining practices.
- Project management experience in a research or industrial setting.
