Job Description

Embark on an exciting career path as a Sailor – Navigation & Crew Assistance with Career.zycto, based in Crookes, Sheffield. This pivotal role requires a highly motivated, physically capable, and detail-oriented individual to contribute to the safe and efficient operation of our vessels. While based in Sheffield, our operations extend across various waterways, demanding adaptability and a keen understanding of maritime practices. You will be an integral part of our crew, assisting in navigation, maintaining vessel readiness, and ensuring the safety and comfort of everyone onboard.

The Sailor will work closely with the Captain and other crew members, providing essential support in all aspects of vessel operations. This includes handling lines, mooring and unmooring, standing watch, and participating in routine maintenance tasks to ensure the vessel remains in peak condition. A strong emphasis will be placed on understanding and adhering to all safety protocols, contributing to a secure and incident-free environment. This role is not just about physical tasks; it demands mental acuity for situational awareness, problem-solving, and effective communication in a dynamic setting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist licensed officers with safe navigation, including maintaining a proper lookout, recording logbook entries, and monitoring navigation equipment.
  • Perform general deck duties such as mooring, unmooring, anchoring, and handling lines with precision and safety.
  • Conduct routine vessel maintenance, including cleaning, painting, chipping, and lubrication of deck machinery and equipment.
  • Participate in safety drills, emergency procedures, and maintain familiarity with all safety equipment and protocols.
  • Assist with loading and unloading cargo, stores, and provisions, ensuring proper stowage and securing.
  • Operate deck machinery and equipment, such as winches, cranes, and davits, under supervision.
  • Support crew members in various tasks, fostering a collaborative and efficient working environment.
  • Adhere strictly to all maritime regulations, company policies, and environmental protection standards.
  • Report any equipment malfunctions, safety hazards, or unusual observations to the commanding officer.
  • Maintain high standards of personal hygiene and contribute to the cleanliness of living and working areas.

Required Skills

  • Minimum of 2 years (24 months) demonstrable experience as a deckhand or sailor on commercial or private vessels.
  • Proficiency in basic seamanship, including knot tying, line handling, and anchoring procedures.
  • Strong physical fitness and stamina, capable of performing demanding tasks in various weather conditions.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Proven ability to follow instructions diligently and respond effectively to commands.
  • A thorough understanding of maritime safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  • Valid STCW Basic Safety Training certification (or equivalent).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience on inland waterways or specialized vessels relevant to UK operations.
  • Proficiency in basic navigation tools and electronic charting systems.
  • Mechanical aptitude for minor equipment maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Proficiency in additional languages relevant to international maritime operations.
