Job Description
Bindura High School is seeking a compassionate, dedicated, and experienced School Counselor to join our vibrant team. This full-time, on-site position is crucial in supporting the social, emotional, academic, and career development of our secondary school students. The successful candidate will provide comprehensive counseling services, including individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, academic advising, and career guidance tailored to the unique needs of adolescents. You will play a pivotal role in creating a positive school climate, promoting student well-being, and collaborating effectively with teachers, parents, and administrators to ensure every student thrives. Key Responsibilities
- Provide individual and group counseling to students regarding personal, social, emotional, academic, and career concerns, adhering to ethical guidelines.
- Conduct crisis intervention and conflict resolution, responding effectively to student emergencies, challenging behaviors, and sensitive situations.
- Develop and implement school-wide guidance programs and workshops on topics such as study skills, anti-bullying strategies, mental health awareness, substance abuse prevention, and career exploration.
- Collaborate proactively with teachers, parents, and administrators to identify student needs, develop intervention plans, and facilitate appropriate referrals to external support services when necessary.
- Assist students with academic planning, course selection, transition support, and post-secondary educational and career exploration, including application processes.
- Maintain accurate, confidential, and up-to-date student records in compliance with professional standards and school policies.
- Advocate for student needs and rights, ensuring a supportive and inclusive school environment that addresses diversity and equity.
- Participate actively in professional development activities, workshops, and conferences to stay current with best practices and emerging trends in school counseling.
- Liaise with external agencies, community resources, and mental health professionals to provide comprehensive support to students and their families.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, or a closely related field from an accredited institution.
- Minimum of 2 years of proven experience in school counseling or a similar youth-focused counseling role, preferably within a secondary school setting.
- Strong understanding of child and adolescent development, including common developmental challenges and psychological needs.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication (verbal and written), and active listening skills with the ability to build rapport quickly.
- Ability to work effectively and sensitively with diverse student populations, parents, and school staff.
- Proficiency in crisis intervention, de-escalation techniques, and conflict resolution strategies.
- Demonstrated empathy, patience, resilience, and a non-judgmental approach to student support.
- Exceptional ability to maintain strict confidentiality and adhere to professional ethical standards.
- Solid knowledge of academic and career guidance resources, strategies, and planning tools.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in School Counseling, Educational Psychology, or a related clinical field.
- Professional counseling certification or license recognized within Zimbabwe (if applicable).
- Direct experience working in a secondary school setting within Zimbabwe's educational system.
- Familiarity with local educational policies, community resources, and support networks.
- Fluency in Shona or Ndebele in addition to English, to effectively communicate with a broader range of students and families.
