Job Description
Career.zycto is seeking an experienced and highly skilled Ship Captain to take command of our vessels operating within Canadian coastal waters and potentially international routes. This full-time position requires a maritime professional with an unwavering commitment to safety, operational excellence, and crew welfare. As the Ship Captain, you will be the ultimate authority on board, responsible for the safe navigation, operation, and maintenance of the vessel, its crew, and cargo. You will ensure strict compliance with all national and international maritime regulations, company policies, and environmental standards. You will oversee all aspects of vessel operations, including voyage planning, cargo handling, crew management, budget adherence, and emergency response. Key Responsibilities
- Command and navigate the vessel safely and efficiently, ensuring adherence to all international and national maritime regulations (SOLAS, MARPOL, STCW, etc.)
- Oversee all vessel operations, including voyage planning, cargo loading and discharge, and port entry/departure procedures.
- Manage and lead the onboard crew, fostering a positive and productive work environment, conducting performance reviews, and ensuring crew training and development.
- Ensure the safety of the vessel, crew, passengers, and cargo at all times, implementing and enforcing robust safety management systems and emergency procedures.
- Conduct regular inspections and maintenance checks on vessel equipment and systems, coordinating with the Chief Engineer for technical matters.
- Maintain accurate logbooks, records, and reports related to vessel operations, crew, and incidents.
- Manage vessel budgets, supplies, and provisions efficiently.
- Communicate effectively with shore-based management, port authorities, and other stakeholders.
- Implement and uphold environmental protection policies and procedures.
- Respond effectively to emergencies, including fire, collision, grounding, and man overboard situations.
Required Skills
- Master Mariner Certificate of Competency (unlimited or appropriate to vessel tonnage/area)
- Valid STCW Certificates (including medical fitness)
- Extensive command experience on commercial vessels (type relevant to company fleet)
- Exceptional leadership and communication skills
- Proficiency in navigation, marine electronics, and GMDSS systems
- Thorough knowledge of maritime law, regulations, and safety management systems (ISM Code)
- Strong decision-making and problem-solving abilities under pressure
- Budget management and administrative skills
- Fluency in English (written and spoken)
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with specific vessel types (e.g., Container, Bulk Carrier, Offshore Support)
- Advanced training in crisis management and human behaviour
- Familiarity with digital vessel management systems
