Job Description
We are actively seeking a dedicated and physically capable Shipping Container Handler to join our operational team in Migombani, Zanzibar City. This is a critical full-time, on-site role responsible for the efficient and safe movement of shipping containers within the port facility. The Shipping Container Handler will operate various types of heavy lifting equipment, including reach stackers, empty container handlers, and forklifts, to load, unload, stack, and retrieve containers from vessels, trucks, and railcars. The successful candidate will play a vital role in maintaining the smooth flow of cargo operations, ensuring timely turnaround of vessels and efficient use of yard space. This position demands a strong commitment to safety protocols, meticulous attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic port environment. You will be expected to conduct pre-operational checks on equipment, report any malfunctions, and adhere strictly to all operational procedures and safety guidelines to prevent accidents and damage to property. This role requires individuals who are not only skilled in heavy equipment operation but also possess a keen understanding of cargo handling logistics and inventory management principles as they relate to container operations. Excellent communication skills are essential for coordinating with crane operators, vessel crews, truck drivers, and other port personnel.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate heavy lifting equipment such such as reach stackers, empty container handlers, and forklifts to move, stack, and position shipping containers.
- Load and unload containers safely and efficiently onto/from vessels, trucks, and railcars, following established procedures.
- Perform routine pre-operational checks and minor maintenance on equipment, reporting any faults or damage promptly.
- Adhere strictly to all safety regulations, company policies, and port procedures to ensure a safe working environment.
- Monitor container manifests and yard plans to ensure accurate placement and retrieval of containers.
- Collaborate with crane operators, vessel crew, truck drivers, and other port staff to coordinate container movements.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area, contributing to overall operational efficiency.
- Participate in ongoing training and development programs to enhance skills and knowledge.
- Assist with inventory management and tracking of container locations within the yard.
Required Skills
- Proven experience operating heavy lifting equipment (e.g., reach stackers, forklifts, empty container handlers).
- Valid heavy equipment operator's license/certification specific to container handling.
- Strong understanding of port safety regulations and operational procedures.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, outdoor environment, enduring varying weather conditions.
- Excellent spatial awareness and hand-eye coordination.
- Physical stamina and ability to perform demanding tasks.
- Basic mechanical aptitude for equipment checks and troubleshooting.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
