In this pivotal role, you will be instrumental in guiding foreign individuals and families through the intricacies of Canadian immigration law. Your day-to-day will involve providing comprehensive legal consultations, meticulously preparing and submitting various visa applications—including visitor, student, work permits, and permanent residency—and skillfully navigating complex scenarios such as refugee claims and appeals. You will represent clients before immigration tribunals and potentially federal courts, advocating passionately for their rights and interests. A key aspect of your work will be to conduct thorough legal research, analyze evolving immigration policies, and meticulously draft legal documents, all while maintaining the highest standards of professional conduct and client confidentiality.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide expert legal advice and representation to foreign nationals on Canadian immigration and refugee matters.
  • Assist clients with the preparation and submission of various visa applications, including temporary resident visas, study permits, work permits, and permanent residency applications (e.g., Express Entry, Provincial Nominee Programs).
  • Handle complex immigration cases, including inadmissibility issues, humanitarian and compassionate applications, and pre-removal risk assessments.
  • Prepare and present refugee claims, attend hearings before the Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB), and pursue appeals as necessary.
  • Represent clients before the Immigration Appeal Division (IAD) and potentially the Federal Court of Canada for judicial reviews.
  • Conduct thorough legal research and analysis on Canadian immigration law, policies, and international human rights treaties.
  • Draft comprehensive legal documents, including legal opinions, submissions, affidavits, and correspondence.
  • Maintain meticulous and confidential client files in compliance with professional standards.
  • Stay current with legislative changes, policy updates, and case law developments in Canadian immigration and refugee law.
  • Collaborate effectively with paralegals, legal assistants, and other team members to ensure efficient case management and client satisfaction.
  • Offer culturally sensitive and empathetic guidance to clients from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds.

Required Skills

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) or Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree from an accredited institution.
  • Called to the Bar in Manitoba and in good standing with the Law Society of Manitoba.
  • Minimum of 4 years of demonstrated experience practicing Canadian immigration and refugee law.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex legal concepts clearly.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking abilities.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity, and empathy for clients.
  • Proficiency in legal research platforms such as LexisNexis, Westlaw, or equivalent.
  • Proven ability to manage a diverse and demanding caseload efficiently and effectively.
  • High level of professionalism, integrity, and ethical conduct.
  • Fluency in English is essential.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficiency in additional languages (e.g., French, Tagalog, Hindi, Punjabi, Ukrainian, Mandarin) to serve our diverse client base.
  • Experience in cross-cultural communication and negotiation.
  • Previous experience with a legal case management software system.
  • Demonstrated experience in complex immigration appeals or federal court litigation.
  • Completion of specialized training or certification in immigration and refugee law.
