Job Description
Are you a meticulous and proactive tax professional with a passion for navigating complex tax landscapes? BDO Mauritius is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Tax Consultant to join our vibrant team in Plaine Verte, Port Louis. In this pivotal role, you will be instrumental in assisting our diverse client base with all aspects of tax compliance, advisory, and audit support, ensuring adherence to the latest Mauritian tax legislation and international tax standards where applicable.
As a Tax Consultant specialising in filing and audit, you will take ownership of managing a portfolio of clients, guiding them through their annual tax obligations, including corporate tax, personal income tax, VAT, and other relevant duties. Your expertise will be crucial in preparing and reviewing tax computations, compiling accurate tax returns, and ensuring timely submission to the Mauritius Revenue Authority (MRA). Beyond compliance, you will play a key role in providing proactive tax advice, identifying opportunities for tax efficiencies, and mitigating potential risks for our clients.
A significant part of this role involves supporting clients through tax audits and investigations initiated by the MRA. You will represent clients during these processes, prepare necessary documentation, respond to queries, and work diligently to achieve favourable outcomes. This position requires a keen eye for detail, strong analytical capabilities, and excellent communication skills to articulate complex tax matters clearly to clients and regulatory bodies. You will also stay abreast of changes in tax laws and regulations, contributing to the firm’s knowledge base and ensuring our advice remains cutting-edge and compliant. Key Responsibilities
- Manage a portfolio of clients for tax compliance and advisory services, including corporations, individuals, and trusts.
- Prepare and review corporate tax returns, personal income tax returns, VAT returns, and other statutory filings.
- Ensure accurate and timely submission of all tax returns and payments to the Mauritius Revenue Authority (MRA).
- Provide expert tax advice on various tax matters, including direct and indirect taxes, international taxation, and tax planning strategies.
- Assist clients during tax audits, investigations, and queries from the MRA, preparing responses and supporting documentation.
- Conduct thorough tax research and analysis to stay updated on changes in Mauritian tax legislation and regulations.
- Identify opportunities for tax optimisation and risk mitigation for clients, offering strategic insights.
- Maintain strong client relationships, acting as a trusted advisor and primary point of contact for tax-related queries.
Required Skills
- Proven experience in tax compliance, filing, and audit support within Mauritius.
- In-depth knowledge of Mauritian tax laws and regulations (Income Tax Act, VAT Act, etc.).
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with meticulous attention to detail.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and French.
- Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel.
- Ability to manage multiple client engagements and meet tight deadlines.
- A Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Law, or a related field.
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional qualification such as ACCA, ACA, CTA, or equivalent.
- Prior experience working in a 'Big Four' or reputable accounting/consulting firm.
- Experience with tax-specific software and platforms.
- Knowledge of international tax principles and their application in Mauritius.
