Job Description

Are you a passionate storyteller with a profound appreciation for South African history and cultural heritage? Maropeng is seeking an enthusiastic and knowledgeable Tour Guide to join our dynamic team on a flexible, part-time basis. This pivotal role involves leading visitors through the breathtaking landscapes and profound exhibitions of the Cradle of Humankind, including Maropeng Visitor Centre and the Sterkfontein Caves. You will be instrumental in bringing to life the incredible story of human origins, interpreting complex scientific and historical information in an accessible and engaging manner for diverse audiences.

We are looking for an individual who is not only well-versed in the geology, palaeontology, and archaeology of the site but also possesses exceptional interpersonal skills, a vibrant personality, and the ability to captivate and educate groups of all ages and backgrounds. Your day will involve conducting guided tours, answering questions, ensuring visitor safety, and providing an unforgettable educational and cultural experience. Given the ‘Flexible Hours’ nature of this role, we require adaptability to work varying shifts, which may include weekends, public holidays, and occasional evenings, depending on visitor demand and seasonal events. Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct engaging and informative guided tours of the Maropeng Visitor Centre and Sterkfontein Caves for diverse groups.
  • Present complex scientific and historical information about human evolution, geology, palaeontology, and archaeology in an understandable and exciting way.
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of all tour participants throughout the duration of the visit.
  • Manage group dynamics effectively, keeping tours on schedule and addressing questions or concerns professionally.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of the latest research and discoveries relevant to the Cradle of Humankind.
  • Assist visitors with general inquiries and provide exceptional customer service.
  • Adhere to all site regulations, safety protocols, and operational procedures.
  • Collaborate with other team members to enhance the overall visitor experience.
  • Be flexible with working hours, including weekends, public holidays, and varying shifts based on operational needs.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience as a tour guide, particularly within cultural, historical, or scientific sites.
  • In-depth knowledge of South African history, cultural heritage, and the significance of the Cradle of Humankind.
  • Excellent communication and public speaking skills with the ability to engage and inspire diverse audiences.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a friendly, approachable demeanor.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Problem-solving skills and the ability to handle unexpected situations calmly.
  • Fluency in English; proficiency in additional South African official languages is a significant advantage.
  • Physical stamina to walk and stand for extended periods, and navigate challenging terrain (e.g., caves).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Relevant qualification in Tourism, History, Archaeology, Palaeontology, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Valid professional driver's license (e.g., Code 8 or higher) with a PDP (Professional Driving Permit) for transporting groups, if required.
  • Proficiency in additional South African official languages (e.g., isiZulu, Sesotho, Afrikaans).
  • Experience working with international tourists and understanding of cross-cultural communication.
