Job Description

Murang’a University of Technology (MUT) is seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic University Research Assistant to join our dynamic academic and research team. Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive literature reviews and synthesize existing research findings.
  • Assist in the design and implementation of research methodologies, including surveys, experiments, and interviews.
  • Collect, organize, and manage research data, ensuring accuracy, confidentiality, and integrity.
  • Perform preliminary data analysis using appropriate statistical software or qualitative methods, under supervision.
  • Contribute to the drafting and editing of research reports, academic papers, presentations, and grant proposals.
  • Maintain meticulous records of all research activities, data, and findings.
  • Assist in preparing materials for research ethics board applications and ensuring strict compliance with ethical guidelines.
  • Organize and actively participate in research team meetings, workshops, and seminars.
  • Support faculty in preparing teaching materials or presentations related to ongoing research findings.
  • Manage research-related administrative tasks, including scheduling, procurement of resources, and communication with project partners and stakeholders.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (e.g., Science, Engineering, Social Sciences, Agriculture, Business).
  • Demonstrated strong academic record, typically a minimum of a Second Class Honours (Upper Division).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Proficiency in basic research methods and data collection techniques.
  • Ability to conduct thorough and systematic literature reviews.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking abilities, coupled with effective problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) for document preparation and data management.
  • High level of attention to detail and exceptional organizational skills.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Proactive attitude, eager to learn new research techniques, software, and disciplinary knowledge.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in a research setting (e.g., academic projects, internships, volunteer work).
  • Familiarity with statistical software packages (e.g., SPSS, R, Stata) or qualitative data analysis software (e.g., NVivo).
  • Experience with academic writing and various citation styles (e.g., APA, MLA, Chicago).
  • Demonstrated interest in interdisciplinary research and willingness to engage with diverse topics.
  • Working knowledge of research ethics principles and data privacy regulations (e.g., GDPR, Kenyan Data Protection Act).
