Job Description
Career.zycto is excited to partner with a progressive local entity in Downtown Leavenworth to find a dedicated and visionary Urban Planner. This full-time position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the strategic growth and preservation of Leavenworth’s distinctive character, harmonizing its renowned Bavarian theme with modern urban development principles. As an Urban Planner, you will play a crucial role in shaping the physical and social landscape of our beloved community, ensuring that all development is sustainable, aesthetically pleasing, and serves the long-term interests of residents and visitors alike.
Your work will encompass a broad spectrum of planning activities, from crafting comprehensive plans and specific area plans to reviewing development proposals and ensuring compliance with local zoning ordinances and state regulations. This role demands a keen eye for detail, a deep understanding of urban design principles, environmental stewardship, and community engagement strategies. You will be instrumental in facilitating public workshops, presentations, and meetings, acting as a liaison between government, developers, and the community. The ideal candidate will be adept at managing multiple projects simultaneously, demonstrating strong analytical capabilities, and possessing excellent written and verbal communication skills. Key Responsibilities
- Develop, update, and implement comprehensive plans, zoning ordinances, and design guidelines consistent with community goals and state requirements.
- Review and process land use applications, including subdivisions, conditional use permits, and variances, ensuring compliance with relevant regulations.
- Conduct thorough site analyses, impact assessments, and policy research to inform planning decisions.
- Prepare staff reports, presentations, and recommendations for planning commissions, city councils, and public hearings.
- Facilitate and lead public outreach efforts, community meetings, and workshops to gather input and build consensus on planning initiatives.
- Provide expert advice and technical assistance to city departments, elected officials, developers, and the public on planning and zoning matters.
- Collaborate with architects, engineers, environmental consultants, and other stakeholders on various development projects.
- Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of planning policies and programs, recommending adjustments as needed.
- Stay abreast of best practices, emerging trends, and legislative changes in urban planning and land use.
- Manage grant applications and project budgets as required for specific planning initiatives.
Required Skills
- Master's degree in Urban Planning, City Planning, or a closely related field.
- Minimum of 3 years of progressively responsible experience in urban or regional planning.
- Proficiency in GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS) for spatial analysis and map creation.
- Strong understanding of land use law, zoning principles, and environmental regulations.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking and technical report writing.
- Demonstrated ability to manage complex projects and multiple priorities.
- Proven experience in community engagement and public participation processes.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Preferred Qualifications
- AICP (American Institute of Certified Planners) certification.
- Experience working with historic preservation districts or culturally significant areas.
- Familiarity with graphic design software (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite) for visual communication.
- Knowledge of sustainable development practices and resilient planning strategies.
- Experience in a small to medium-sized municipal planning department.
