Job Description

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct thorough physical examinations and diagnostic tests to accurately diagnose animal health conditions.
  • Develop and implement comprehensive treatment plans, including medication, nutrition, and lifestyle recommendations.
  • Perform routine and emergency surgical procedures, including spays, neuters, soft tissue, and minor orthopedic surgeries.
  • Administer vaccinations, preventative medications, and parasite control.
  • Educate pet owners on animal health, disease prevention, post-operative care, and nutritional needs.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed patient medical records, ensuring compliance with veterinary standards.
  • Respond to and manage veterinary emergencies with efficiency and professionalism.
  • Collaborate effectively with veterinary technicians, assistants, and administrative staff to ensure optimal patient care and clinic flow.
  • Provide compassionate end-of-life care and support to pet owners.
  • Stay current with advances in veterinary medicine through continuing education and professional development.

Required Skills

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree.
  • Current and unrestricted veterinary license to practice in Jamaica.
  • Proven ability to diagnose and treat a wide range of small animal medical conditions.
  • Proficiency in routine and emergency surgical procedures.
  • Strong diagnostic and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a compassionate approach to clients and patients.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Sound knowledge of veterinary pharmacology and therapeutics.
  • High level of integrity, ethics, and professionalism.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 2+ years of experience in a small animal general practice setting.
  • Special interest or experience in dentistry, ultrasonography, or advanced imaging.
  • Experience with veterinary practice management software (e.g., Avimark, Cornerstone).
  • Participation in veterinary community outreach or educational programs.
  • Bilingual abilities (e.g., English and Spanish).
