Key Responsibilities
- Assist veterinarians during examinations, consultations, and surgical procedures, including preparation of patients and surgical sites.
- Administer medications, vaccinations, and treatments as directed by the veterinarian, ensuring accurate dosage and timing.
- Monitor anesthetized patients and those recovering from surgery, maintaining detailed records of vital signs and observations.
- Perform diagnostic tests such as blood draws, urine analysis, and radiography, ensuring proper sample collection and handling.
- Provide compassionate nursing care to hospitalized animals, including feeding, walking, hygiene, and comfort measures.
- Educate pet owners on animal care, post-operative instructions, medication administration, and preventative health measures.
- Maintain cleanliness and sterility of examination rooms, surgical suites, and all clinic areas, adhering to strict hygiene protocols.
- Manage and organize clinic supplies, ensuring adequate stock levels and proper storage of medications and equipment.
- Assist with client reception, scheduling appointments, managing patient records, and handling billing inquiries.
- Handle and restrain animals safely and humanely, demonstrating a thorough understanding of animal behavior.
Required Skills
- Proficiency in animal handling and restraint techniques for various species.
- Demonstrated knowledge of veterinary medical terminology, procedures, and pharmacology.
- Ability to perform basic laboratory tests (e.g., urinalysis, fecal exams).
- Experience with anesthesia monitoring and patient recovery care.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to empathize with pet owners.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Basic computer literacy for record-keeping and clinic management software.
- Fluent in English and French, both written and spoken.
Preferred Qualifications
- Diploma or certification in Veterinary Nursing/Technology or equivalent.
- Previous experience working in a small animal veterinary clinic.
- Experience with emergency and critical care nursing.
- Knowledge of local Mauritian animal health regulations and common local pet health concerns.
- Familiarity with Idexx or similar veterinary practice management software.
