This unique opportunity combines the stability of an on-site role at our state-of-the-art facilities in Utah with exciting assignments to our diverse global operations.
As a Welding Technician in this program, you will play a critical role in maintaining, repairing, and fabricating vital machinery and infrastructure across our expansive operations, both locally at our Utah complex and potentially at our sites worldwide. Your expertise will be crucial for ensuring the structural integrity and operational efficiency of heavy mining equipment, processing plants, and various industrial assets. You will be responsible for executing precise welding and fabrication tasks using a variety of techniques (MIG, TIG, Stick, Flux-Cored Arc Welding) on diverse materials, adhering strictly to international safety standards and engineering specifications. The Work Abroad Program element means you must be prepared for periodic international travel, sometimes for extended durations, to support critical projects in locations spanning continents. This will involve adapting to new environments, collaborating with international teams, and applying your technical skills in varied operational contexts. Key Responsibilities
- Perform various welding processes (MIG, TIG, Stick, Flux-Cored Arc Welding) on different materials including carbon steel, stainless steel, and aluminum.
- Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and welding procedure specifications (WPS) to determine appropriate welding techniques and ensure quality.
- Fabricate, install, and repair structural components, piping, tanks, and heavy mining equipment.
- Conduct quality inspections of welded joints to ensure compliance with industry standards and engineering specifications.
- Adhere strictly to all safety protocols, Lockout/Tagout procedures, and company policies, both locally and internationally.
- Maintain welding equipment and tools in proper working condition, performing minor repairs and preventative maintenance.
- Collaborate with engineering, maintenance, and operational teams to troubleshoot issues and optimize repair strategies.
- Prepare for and undertake international assignments as part of the Work Abroad Program, including compliance with travel requirements and cultural sensitivity training.
- Document work performed, materials used, and equipment status accurately.
- Mentor junior technicians and share best practices across diverse teams.
Required Skills
- Minimum of 4 years of experience as a certified Welder or Welding Technician in an industrial setting.
- Proficiency in multiple welding processes (MIG, TIG, Stick, FCAW).
- Strong ability to read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and welding symbols.
- Thorough understanding of welding metallurgy and material properties.
- Commitment to safety and ability to follow strict safety protocols.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Proven mechanical aptitude and hands-on experience with heavy machinery.
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel internationally for extended periods.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate’s degree or vocational certification in Welding Technology or a related field.
- Current AWS (American Welding Society) or equivalent international welding certifications.
- Experience in the mining, heavy manufacturing, or construction industries.
- Familiarity with NDT (Non-Destructive Testing) methods.
- Prior experience working in culturally diverse or international environments.
- Proficiency in a second language relevant to Rio Tinto's global operations (e.g., Spanish, French, Portuguese).
