Job Description
PG Industries Zimbabwe is seeking a highly skilled and passionate Woodworking Craftsman to join our dynamic team in Chegutu, Mashonaland West Province. As a Woodworking Craftsman, you will be instrumental in the creation, assembly, and finishing of a variety of timber products, ranging from bespoke furniture pieces to intricate joinery components for construction projects. Your role will involve working with both raw timber and engineered wood products, transforming them into finished goods that meet our stringent quality standards and client specifications. Key Responsibilities
- Interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and specifications to plan woodworking projects accurately.
- Select and prepare appropriate timber and materials, considering grain, strength, and appearance.
- Operate a variety of woodworking machinery and hand tools safely and proficiently, including saws, planers, routers, sanders, and chisels.
- Measure, cut, shape, and assemble wooden components with precision and accuracy.
- Perform intricate joinery work, such as dovetails, mortise and tenon joints, and lap joints.
- Apply finishes, sealants, and polishes to wood surfaces, ensuring a high-quality aesthetic and protective coating.
- Conduct quality checks throughout the production process to ensure products meet design specifications and quality standards.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe workshop environment, adhering strictly to all safety protocols.
- Perform routine maintenance and calibration of woodworking machinery and tools.
- Collaborate with designers, project managers, and other team members to ensure project goals are met.
- Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to material defects or machinery malfunctions.
- Assist in the loading and unloading of timber and finished products as required.
Required Skills
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting technical drawings and blueprints.
- Expert knowledge of various woodworking techniques and joinery methods.
- Skilled in operating and maintaining woodworking machinery (e.g., table saws, band saws, routers, planers, sanders).
- Proficiency with hand tools (e.g., chisels, planes, measuring tools).
- Strong understanding of timber properties, characteristics, and selection.
- Excellent attention to detail and precision in craftsmanship.
- Solid understanding of workshop safety procedures and best practices.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Good physical stamina and manual dexterity.
Preferred Qualifications
- Relevant trade certification or diploma in Carpentry, Joinery, or Woodworking.
- Experience with bespoke furniture making or custom joinery projects.
- Familiarity with CAD/CAM software for woodworking design (e.g., SketchUp, AutoCAD).
- Basic knowledge of wood finishing techniques and materials.
- Ability to mentor junior craftsmen or apprentices.
