Job Description
Career.zycto is urgently seeking an experienced and highly organized Yard Marshall to join our growing logistics team in Downtown, Lakewood. This pivotal role involves the precise coordination and movement of trailers, ensuring the efficient flow of goods within our busy yard operations. As a Yard Marshall, you will be the linchpin in maintaining yard integrity, optimizing space utilization, and safeguarding inventory. You’ll work closely with warehouse operations, dispatch, and transportation teams to prevent bottlenecks and ensure timely departures and arrivals. The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of yard management principles, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to safety and operational excellence. This is a critical hands-on role requiring attention to detail, proactive problem-solving, and the ability to thrive in a dynamic, high-volume environment. We are looking for someone who takes initiative, is highly reliable, and can adapt quickly to changing priorities while maintaining a high standard of work.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and coordinate the movement of trailers and equipment within the yard, ensuring efficient space utilization and organization.
- Perform daily yard checks, documenting trailer locations, contents, and statuses accurately using a Yard Management System (YMS).
- Communicate effectively with drivers, dispatch, and warehouse personnel regarding trailer movements, pickups, and drop-offs.
- Operate yard hostlers/spotters safely and proficiently to move trailers between docks, staging areas, and parking slots.
- Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of yard equipment, reporting any mechanical issues or damage promptly.
- Monitor and enforce yard safety procedures and regulations to maintain a secure working environment.
- Assist in the staging and un-staging of trailers for loading and unloading operations.
- Troubleshoot and resolve yard-related issues, such as misplaced trailers or logistical conflicts.
- Maintain cleanliness and orderliness of the yard.
- Assist with other logistics support tasks as needed to ensure smooth operations.
Required Skills
- Minimum 1 year of experience as a Yard Marshall, Spotter Driver, or similar logistics role.
- Proficiency in operating yard hostlers/spotters and/or Class A CDL with clean driving record.
- Strong understanding of yard management systems (YMS) and inventory tracking.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal.
- Demonstrated commitment to safety protocols and procedures.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
- Basic computer proficiency for data entry and record-keeping.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with various types of trailers (dry van, refrigerated, flatbed).
- Knowledge of DOT regulations related to commercial vehicle operations.
- Forklift certification or experience.
- Ability to perform light maintenance checks on yard equipment.
- Prior experience in a high-volume distribution or manufacturing environment.
